Tax Office

I'm not sure where to post this so I opted for here

I have to phone the tax office to tell them of increased pension and salary incomes...I tried phoning yesterday and it took ages to plough through the introductary "did you know" and press 1 for this and 2 for that...finally got a ringing tone but waited so long I had to put the phone down

This is an 0845 number, does anyone know if there is an alternative one?

Thanks

normallly there would be no need to tell HMRC about an increase in earnings.

why do you ned to tell them; are these new pensions or a new job?
  • Can't you just write to them? Heck of a lot simpler, saves your frayed nerves and you've got it all in writing.

I have a final salary pension and I have just had 5 years RPI/CPI added to it, the tax code for this is 499

I also have another job and have had an incremental pay increase and the tax code is BR...

unless I tell them now I'll end up with tax owing, I'd rather pay it PAYE

    I'm just after a phone number that isn't 0845

I may just do that at this rate

I assume the OP's tax code could be effected by total income.
    i.e.
If you are 65 or over, then the age related allowances may need to be adjusted if your total income exceeds the income limit of £24K for the 2011-12 tax year.

I have always used the phone number quoted at the top of the P2 Coding Notice and have never had a problem getting through (although depending on the time of day, it can take several minutes on hold)

It can make a significant difference to the amount of tax due, but if the change of income is only relatively small, HMRC would adjust your tax code to adjust for the difference in a future tax year.

Having said that, I like to keep things accurate myself, so I usually do inform HMRC of any differences, but I have been accused of being a bit of a perfectionist :o

well I can't help with the telephone number although I have to say when I've phoned them I haven't waited very long.

so the issue is that you pay 40% tax on some of your earnings which wouldn't now be recoverd through PAYE

I'ld just put some money aside in a saving a/c so the money is available when required (say 20% of the increases would be about right) but that's just me
