Tooth abscess??

a couple of months ago i took a rare trip to a dentist because 1 of my teeth was decaying, only really ached when i ate and not too painful, sometimes a sharp but short pain, more a problem with toothpicks.

he said he was unable to pull it, he put a small bit of temporary filling in which helped a little and referred me to a specialist,

unfortunately he wrote down the wrong tooth to pull and although the clinic knew which 1 was the problem, he wouldn't pull it,
i then had to go back and get another referral, but it was going to be mid october.

i (or my o/h) decided it was too long to wait and found a new dentist who i hoped would pull there and then, he had a look and asked if i was in any pain, (mild, but usually just discomfort) and decided it could be filled to my surprise.

first few days was like having a new tooth in, but tuesday i got bad toothache, up half the night then when i did drop off, boss called to see if i'd work my day off! grrrrrrr

my o/h rang yesterday to make a new appointment but it was fine all day yesterday, no pain at all but i've been awake since 3am with toothache again, pain as now stopped without taking painkillers as i don't like taking them, unfortunately it nearly time for work!

could it be an abscess brewing?
never had 1 before but the dentist said it would have been painful 24/7 and he saw no sign of infection before he filled it last thursday or perhaps the new filling has enclosed it causing it to intensify any pain?

    Sounds like it could be.

They're not always painfull all the time, especially in the early stages. But it's impossible to diagnose accurately without seeing you.

Get back to the dentist again. It's always best to try and save teeth if you can, so I wouldn't hold it against dentist #2.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Don't hold it against any of them, I know who's fault it is!
Anyway, just come back and put me on a course of anti-biotics,
He's hoping it me be a gum problem but doesn't understand why it's been ok in-between?
but if it persists he may have to drill into it to do whatever they do?
Says it could be painful but I'd sooner have it that way than persistent pain

Ive jst had a badly infected abcess drained out and cleaned, gotta admit, the dentist said it may be painful but to be honest I never felt a thing cos the pain from that was no match for the pain I had been going through for the past 24 hours, excrutiating to say the least.
I told him he could have chopped my head off as long as he took the pain away. I felt 100% better even before I got out of the chair.

He said he could see a small piece fo root which must have been left when the last dentist pulled out a back tooth and it broke into pieces and the infection had probably come from there, which presumably explains why I felt I had toothache where I had no teeth lol.

To be honest, I thought I was going to lose a tooth but the infection hadnt touched the tooth so he saved it. Phew.

The practice got a big box of mixed biscuits next day
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I've just been given antibiotics for one (foul tasting ones I may add!) but don't have tooth pain constantly either.Pain in or around the tooth itself is on and off but I am getting pain more around the jaw and in my ear (the ear is the worst for me tbh and I can't wait for it to feel normal again).I thought it wouldn't be an abscess as it wasn't constant pain in the tooth area too!

a bit of further advice needed,
my course of antibiotics ends today (200mg metronidazole), I've had virtually no pain since saturday (also taken some pain killers just in case)

I get the odd niggle, nothing i cant handle though, but can still feel where the problem tooth is, i can eat/drink fine, biggest problem been not having a beer ;-)

my dentist did prescribe me a 2nd course of different antibiotics (250mg amoxicillin) as i told him I'm away from this weekend for a week, just in case it flared up again.
is it worth starting them anyway or leave it a few days taking nothing just to see if its ok?

Not sure if anyone is allowed to answer that as it's medical but glad you asked as my antibiotics stop tomorrow (400mg metronidazole,3 times a day) and the only time I can see a dentist is fridays after 4 lol so it could be a while until I can get the tooth sorted! So will be interested to see if anyone replies and whether I desperately need to get it sorted this week!

Sorry to reply to that again but just wanted to laugh at the beer bit:rotfl:At the weekend me and oh were having a laugh and chilling on the sofa in the evening, him with his beer and me with nothing but 7up LOL For some reason as I drank mine I expected it to taste of beer and how disappointed was I:rotfl:

Can I ask if your abscess has released anything at all?Mine is on a tooth I broke on a rock solid Milky Bar Moment:eek: and a couple of times over the past week I've woken up with a tiny bit of goo in it,was blood stained to start with but had a teency bit this morning that wasn't

To be honest I don't know, been so tired I didn't know what day it was!
I woke up in the early hours 1 morning in absolute agony but it seemed to start calming down after, perhaps that was it?
Later on I had a horrible taste in my mouth and no matter how much water I drank it didn't go away.
Going back to the antibiotics, I was told to take the 200mg 1st and the chemist didn't understand that because the others were stronger?
  • Phone your dentist and ask is all we can say to you.

Metronidazole targets different bacteria to amoxycillin so the amoxy isn't "stronger" it just attacks a different set of bacteria. Different types of dental abcesses have different types of bacteria.

he did say the 2nd course was for "just in case" as i'd be out of the country and that the 1st lot should shift the infection which i think it has.

all i could guess is that mine was caught at a very early stage, my dentist first said there wasn't one.
just hope it is on the mend as id hate to be in the same pain as last week on holiday!
