Oily skin and spots - what is the best thing to use?

Options
Since turning 40 my skin has become dreadful, I have blackheads and spots on my forehead, cheeks and chin and I cannot seem to get rid of them. Certainly more than I had as a teenager.

What does everyone else use? I have spent a fortune on Soap & Glory scrubs and lotions after it was recommended in a magazine but after 6 weeks it is pretty much the same - possibly worse - and I do not want to spend money on stuff that is not going to work.

Any advice for me please?

And do you reckon if I contact S&G they will swap the products for something else. Kind of gutted to spend all that money on products that were no good.

  • If you are a Lady, speak to your GP about Hormones.

Otherwise try anything with Tea Tree Oil in it.

My friend has spotty skin and tried lots of stuff but she now swears by the full clinique system for blemished skin - I haven't personally used it but she said it's the only thing that has worked for her.

I'm about the same age as you and have oily spot prone skin I can tell you what works for me but cant guarantee it will work for you, I came to this routine after a long long time of trying everything and a lot of expense

Cleanser - Boots basics cleanser (plain or cucumber)
Toner - Boots basics (plain or cumcumber)
Moisturiser - Any that doesn't contain mineral oil in any form, I can recommend expensive ones that do other stuff but the best cheap one and it is very good is, you've guessed it, Boots basics but buy the one in the tube not in the jar (too heavy) again, plain or cucumber, use sparingly

My secret weapon is a layer of Freederm gel after toner, if I have spots I do this am and pm, if I'm maintaining clear skin just in the evening every other day, this product has an anti-inflammatory in it so it works quickly.

As I said its an individual thing, there seems to be a few questions on this sort of thing at the moment so a search on here should throw up a few more ideas - good luck, I'm happy to give any more suggestions if you need them as I really know how you feel:)

Second Owain - go to your GP. A change in the condition of your skin could mean any number of things. Best to get it checked out.

Just a question - has your diet changed at all in the time your skin has altered? Any foods, ingredients, alcohol, etc? Even small things, like changing from butter to spread, or milk to soya?

Consider visiting your GP, you may need some antibiotics.
I've got some mild spots and can't really combat them. What helps is a pure unrefined facial oil as a moisturizer (interesting tip from glowgirl it doesn't have mineral oil, just 3 ingredients) - it's Pai Bioregenerate Rosehip oil, a contraceptive pill (only good if you're on contraception anyways), and a good foundation to cover it up.

The diet thing is a good point, too much sugar is a killer for my skin.

Revlon Colourstay for oily skin is a godsend when skin isnt looking great, great coverage and staying power and not as harsh on skin as most highly pigmented foundations.

Moisturiser perhaps Dermalogica Oil Control Lotion I've heard its great.

    Toner Lush Tea Tree Oil

    Cleanser...........no great advice
  • You really need to try and understand what is causing your skin problems first. Skin conditions are much easier to treat if you know the underlying cause. Otherwise you may find you are wasting money on products which work for other people, but are not going to work for you - like the Soap & Glory stuff (definitely ask them about a refund by the way).

If you can find a Dermalogica salon nearby, you can go along for a free face mapping analysis which will give you a good insight into exactly what's going on with your skin. The therapist will then be able to give you advice on the sorts of products and ingredients you should be using.

Hope you find something which helps. :)

I was considering Revlon Colourstay for my next purchase, heard a lot of good stuff about it on this board and blogs :) I think I'll go for it. The packaging is quite wierd though, does it really come in a glass bottle?
