arrears charges (Mortgage & Sec loan)

I recently remortgaged in Sept to pay back all debts (including my arrears with my mortgage and pay off secured loan) each month I was charged £30 by each for being in arrears, this was for approx 15 months, but when they found out i was re-mortgaging they also decided to add an arrears charge £1000 + for my mortgage & £500+ for my S loan.
It seems to me that I was taken advantage of because I couldn't afford my own solicitor to represent me. I would be grateful if any has any advice and if it would be possible to claim this back?

could it be that the extra charges were redemption charges not arrear charges? it sounds like that if they only came to light when you remortgaged?I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. it was approx 14-18 months arrears, and those un-employment insurance companies are a joke, cos i had them with both, but when i was un-employed i couldn't afford the premiums so i couldn't claim, after that i was furious and even a year on it still makes me very angry thinking about it:mad:0
