Old debt?

Got a letter from EOS Solutions claiming that i owe a utility company some money from over 5 years ago on a previous address???
They are claming that if i dont pay in the next 7 days they will charge me solicitors fees
They have offered no proof of me owing this debt and after all this time there is no way I can know one way or the other, but I am sure I did pay everything.
I have not yet contacted them so what should I do

If the debt has not been paid for 6 years, it is statute barred and you do not have to pay at all. If you make written acknowledgement or pay even a penny towards it, the six year period restarts. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Either ignore them and wait for them to write again, or you could try sending the prove it letter. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=11570893&postcount=2
If you think it might be close to being statute barred but perhaps not quite then don't send anything other than the prove it letter though, as you don't want to acknowledge the debt at this point.
If you were fairly sure it was already over the 6year period you could send the letter to deny knowledge of tthe debt but it would be statute barred anyway hybrid. Hey Eric,
Great advice from Tixy. I would ignore the first letter and see if they contact you again (sometimes they like to try it on to see if they can get anything out of you!). I had a similar letter a couple of years ago, about a debt I knew I had paid (I traced down my old bank statements to be sure), I ignored it as I couldn't be bothered to deal with it - they haven't contacted me since!
If they do contact you again send a 'prove it' letter, they will probably be stumped by this - if not, just drag it out until it is over the 6 year mark, then they won't be able to chase it anyway :T0 -

Many thanks
I will send them the prove it letter :T0
