Christmas cake....no brandy.....

I am planning on making our Christmas Cake but I dont have any brandy. I have Damson Gin do you think it would be OK to use that instead?

I've chucked all sorts of spirits into Christmas cakes and puds over the years and they've always worked out just fine. Not the same exact taste of course but always nice. My most sucessful batch of Xmas puds contained dregs of Cointreau, sherry and cherry brandy from when I cleared out a relatives booze cabinet. the only spirits I wouldn't use would be coffee or chocolate flavoured ones. Damson gin sounds okay though.

  • I have dug out a bottle of Metaxa we brought in Greece about 5 years ago to 'feed' my cake that I will be making this weekend. Glad I am not the only one doing it!
