Look at the Schuh Ebay site. They have 'Buy Now' skate shoes at a good price, but also some seconds on auction, so you can sometimes get brilliant bargains. My grandchildren think I'm a millionnaire because I'm able to buy them Etnies or DCs! No kids - just a canny granny. :)

I use Vans, live in them, skate in them and they last although i'm no trick skater. BF is and his pairs last him 6 months or so with alot more skating. The soles on his go first so they are still wearable but not in the wet.

I've had several dirt cheap pairs off ebay, just set up an email notification thingy for his size. I've had a few pairs for less than £10.

My son skated loads until recently..he plays bass in a band now so less hard wearing on shoes..lol...but I found Vans to be very poor for skating..lucky to last a month...the best he had were Etnies....managed to get them from TKMaxx...about £25 I think but lasted about 4 months....it used to drive me mad paying so much for these shoes just to be ruined.

  • Hi, your son needs to find a pal which skate's goofy (this is when the other foot does the trick and so ruins the left shoe) and swap shoes! or you can buy a product called shoe goo, this sort of prolongs the use of the trainers.

What swap them each time they skate so the wear is even?

Funnily enough my son is about the only one of his friends who is regular, the rest are all goofy.
  • I get my son's shoes and stuff from http://www.vapourised.com/

Great customer service and I feel they are good value for money. Also, if your kid is skating, remember you'll need a season ticket for the local A&E. :p

  • I've been skateboarding for quite a long time now - I'm 49, and started when I was about 10. In my opinion, the brand is less important than the features. Look at where your son's shoes wear out, then look for skate shoes that are reinforced in that area. Make sense? For what it's worth, I wear Nike SB's Omar Salazar shoes. Until about a year ago I would never have considered Nike as a credible skate brand, but they really seem to have got their act together. I generally have 3 pairs on the go at any one time: one pair that's more or less worn out, a second pair ready to replace them and a third pair I'm breaking in (the Omar Salazar shoes take a bit of wearing in.) I chose them for reasons that may or may not be relevant to the way your son skates (I skate mainly ramps and skateparks rather than streets): they cover the ankle-bone with foam padding, which protects against board impacts; they have reinforcement at the toes, but without vulnerable exposed stitching or edges; and the laces start higher up than on many shoes, which means that when I come off on a ramp and slide on my knee-pads, I'm less likely to snap them.
  • I thought this thread was a non-starter, so sorry for not returning before now!
Thank you all for the info - I'm just going to print off the thread, drag my son shopping (his least favourite activity of all time) and scour ebay and the other sites mentioned over the weekend.
At least now I have an idea about names and features to look for.
