Yes, although proving it is the tricky bit
  • Firstly, wouldn't touch the Reed website with a barge pole. 75% of applications I make I get a response to via other sites. Probably around 25% from the Reed one.

Secondly, there are two elements at play with "foreign names", part of it can be a partially legitimate concern over visas/ rights to work but if you are British then this can easily be countered by stating nationality on the CV. The second can be racism which is alive and kicking in some people.

I have to admit that now my I'm married to my partner and so she has a more English surname (though because its Cornish it likewise isn't a well known name like Jones) it would be interesting to see if her hit rate on job applications changes.... not that I am wanting her to lose her current job to be able to find out.

  • more than 3 interviewees that I interviewed knew nothing when probed deeper than the standard carp which was on their CV's.
To be fair that isnt just limited to foreign people though as have had exactly the same problems with white male english people plus also 2 fairly recently who claimed to have delivered projects that I did. 1 worked for me at the time as an assistant and the other person I'd never even heard of.
  • I was finding this thread hilarious but now I see it as something quite disturbing! how can a name possibly dictate your skills or experience or even your background?? As you've said, your background is British so that proves nothing at all.

Please don't do anything to your name and if someone were to reject you on this basis then really, they're not worthy of your time. In fact, they're walking a very serious edge of discrimination and will no doubt one day learn the hard way.

Keep motivated and keep going - there is a job out there for you!
