Network card needed - how do I know I'm getting right thing?

I've been given a better computer (just the box) by my dad. Still got stuff on old one I want to keep. My bro knows more about inner workings of computers and said just buy a network card for old one and transfer stuff over but how do I know what to get?

Can anyone help please?? MC

If it's a normal desktop PC, and you are sure it doesn't have one already, you will need something like this:

If you don't have a router/hub/switch, you will also need a cat5 crossover cable to connect the 2 network cards.

If you do have a router/hub/switch, then you will need a standard cat5 cable instead.

Alternatively you could use CD's/DVD's or usb flash drives to transfer the data. Or you could buy a usb hard disk caddy, or just attach the drive internally as a slave, which wouldn't cost a penny.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hi

I'm assuming that the replacement has already got a network card fitted. In that case you need a PCI Network Card (10/100 Ethernet) AND a crossover cable to connect the 2.

What are you doing with your old PC? --- Binning it, if so why bother going to expense of buying card and cable! Can you not burn the 'stuff' on to a disc or a USB flash pen drive?
