Hi, I had an injury 11weeks ago and as a self-employed person having no income for almost 3mths is starting to cause issues. I cannot drive so CARBOOTS are not an option. I have tried EBAY but the items I have listed has cost me money and I have not sold anything. Any ideas??? I need to sell without cost. I am willing to sell VHS Films, Vinyl albums, DVD's (but would like more than 30p/film), Music CD's, Ltd ed prints, books, clothing etc....Any help greatly appreciated.

You could try ebid. Doesn't cos anything to list but not as many buyers as ebay.
Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies
  • I am sorry to hear about your misfortune. I am self-employed myself!

In terms of simply making additional money......

VHS films have virtually no value, unless they are collectors items (most charity shops tend to refuse these even as donations as they now cost money to recycle), same situation with vinyls.

Music CD's; Search google for music magpie, they will buy CD's and DVD's, Play.com and Amazon marketplace will allow you to sell these also including books and it costs less than eBay (the biggest online car boot sale, I don't know why anyone bothers with them anyway).

Clothing; I know where I live in Flintshire there is a shop that buys textile materials from you, maybe there is somewhere local to you that does something similar? It's either that or eBay I'm afraid :(

In terms of the limited edition prints maybe you could try selling to a pawn-broker but again eBay would probably be your best bet on that one too.

I assume you may have debts to repay. If that's the case read on....

Before looking to sell all of your possesstions it might be worth looking at firstly reducing your outgoings. I assume you might have credit cards/ mortgage/ other debt repayments you need to keep up and if that's the case then you should seek help from either the CCCS (consumer credit counseling service) or National Debtline to consider a repayment plan as this can reduce your interest rates ect.

I know there is alot of bad rep about PPI (payment protection insurance) but if you have already paid/still paying towards these then you should contact your insurers to see if your covered as you may be entitled to a payout.

Cancel any subscriptions your not obligated to keep paying for (eg Sky, Gym, Virgin TV etc).

Have a look on direct.gov.uk to see if your entitled to any benefits your not already claiming.

If you still don't have enough regular income to support your necessities (eg food and electricity) then you should look at the bankruptcy/insolvency part of this forum to see how you can claim bankruptcy and just concerntrate on paying for the essential basics. (you should only consider that as a last resort to clear your debts)

For further information on the second half of my essay read the forums I believe there is a dedicated place to post stuff like this.

    Hope this helps

  • I just wanted to highlight the benefits advice above and also suggest that for the future if you want to continue as a self-employed person you really need to consider insurance.
  • Do you have any friends or relatives that could drive you to a car boot sale?
