want magimix but too expensive, any suggestions on a cheaper version?

Bought el cheapo food processor from superdrug last year, used it twice then it broke, tried changing fuse, its pooped. Was looking on net, and drooling over the magimix models, but can't afford/justify spending that much cash.
What make/model do you have? Should I buy brand new or EBay? I'm a keen cook and like to try new foods/recipes so it would be well used, I guess it needs to be quite robust, but ideally under £40?
Whats your opinion-many thanks in advance!

    Hi SH

TL is right about buy cheap, buy twice.

ANother option - depending on what you are going to use it for - might be to consider the Braun Multiquick system. This comes with a hand blender and whisk, and depending on what package you buy you can get two different sized chopper bowls, a special blending beaker and goodness knows what else.

Have a look here to get an idea... http://www.braun.com/global/products/fooddrink/foodpreparation/handprocessors/mr6000.html
They also have a little Flash video for you to see how it works.

It's very confusing to work out what you get with what package, so they also have a really useful table here

  • I've got a magimix too ( wouldn't be without it ). I was lucky my husband bought me mine as a thank you gift ( he's very sweet like that, mind you I do run our company ,do all the household finances, cook just about everything from scratch and look after the kids too ......we won't mention cleaning though ........rubbish at that ) .

Anyway I digress ,I have the 4100 ,had it about a year ........fabulous saves me so much time .I agree with TL buy cheap buy twice .I'd look on eBay or even on freecycle or your local paper .It's surprising how many people buy them( or get as wedding presents)put them in the cupboard and never use them( the trick is to always keep them out on your worktop )

Could I suggest that for the next few days you write down everything you cook, and what you would use the MM for if you had it. That should give you an idea of what extra bits you might need, and how powerful a one you want. I have a MM which chops, slices and grates brilliantly, but I think it is much less good than a Kenwood at cakes (not so good at creaming) and HM bread if you want to do that (so I have now got an e Bay 901 Kenwood Chef but have nowhere to put it !). Depending on how much volume of stuff you would be doing so you need a more or less powerful model of MM. The stainles steel ones are very beautiful, but if a white one is cheaper i'd go for that. Also I recently bought a new bowl for mine and the mini bowl which came with it is MUCH better than the original one which I never used, and now I use the little bowl a lot. Happy hunting !
  • Ah thanks you guys, i consider myself an experimental cook I cook at least once a week a batch of home made soup, curry and pasta, all from scratch. I also bake, cakes and puddings weekly. Not to mention the cheese savoury sandwich filling for work bait. Although my kitchen is compact i have just the space and room in my heart for a beautiful magimix,or kenwood. Going to scour Ebay, was just worried incase I ended up with one that didnt work, going to keep an eye out in the yellow/green papers too.
    Thankyou!xx

  • I have a Morphy Richards one that was £25ish three years ago. It works really well for my needs, but I probably only use it one a week or even once a fortnight. Plus there's only myself and my husband.

Still, I use it to make gigantic batches of veggie soup occasionally, and it does bread pretty well. I actually tend to mix the bread in the FP and then transfer it to the breadmaker because I seem to have better luck that way.

Have a look at Kenwood. I had a Kenwood food processor for 15 years before it gave up the ghost.

I'm also looking at the magimix 4100, I've seen it in duck egg blue!

I'm debating whether to go for the pretty one and buy the french fry disc as an extra or to buy the bigger 4200 which comes with it, and is that bit more powerful?

No idea what you should buy, but you should return the other to Superdrug for a refund as it obviously wasn't fit for purpose.
