Olive oil????? Free skincare at home???

Options
Sorry if this annoys anyone.

I remember that someone has posted a thread here about using olive oil and other incredients in the kitchen to make something like homemade skincare. :T I would like to try some of those (as now I have very tight budget after Christmas spending). Unfortunately, I can't find the thread.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks.

If you check out the moneysaving old style board, you will find TONS of stuff like this!

  • Have you tried money saving old style? It sounds like their kind of thing. Try asking in there.

    Mind you I can help.
Olive oil makes an excellent skin moisturiser and hot oil hair treatment. Also Almond oil. Just apply to face, leave for 15 minutes. Blot off and sleep on it. Pretty much the same for hair but wrap a towel or something round your head to protect your pillow. I use a special pillowcase and just loosely plait or scrunchie my hair as I can't sleep with a great big towel on my head.
Slices of cucumber rubbed over the skin will tighten pores and tone skin. Also slices on eyes for 10 mins will reduce bloodshot eyes and help shrink under eyes bags.

Porridge oats ground to a slightly lumpy meal in the processer are a great natural exfoliator. Just damp a flannel, dip in ground oats and scrub all over face and /or body before rinsing off in the shower. Makes your skin really smooth and soft at a fraction of the price of al those shop bought numbers.

Face pack: Whenever you crack an egg for cooking smear your finger round the inside of the shell and apply all round your face as you would a face pack. When set leave for 5 minutes then rinse off. It tightens as it dries drawing out impurities and closing pores.

Avacado shells got a bit left in them? Scoop out and mix into some cheap hair conditioner /rinse. Work into your hair after washing. Sling a hot towel ( wet or dry) round your head for 5 minutes then rinse thoroughly for a really effective deep conditioning treatment.

There's loads more if anyone's interested.

Thanks both of you. I am looking for a thread in MSE, may be posted in August or September 2006. As I remember, there were a lot of interesting information there.

I don't know how to search from moneysaving old styles. Any suggestion?

Another thing, which type of olive oil is good for using as an ingredient in skincare, extra virgin, virgin or normal one?

    Sorry for silly questions......
  • Normal Olive Oil is fine, so long as it isn't blended with anything (herbs etc) Go for the cheapest stuff you can find and don't worry if it goes cloudy when cold - this means it's filtered less than the more expensive varieties, it'll clear at room temperature and is more natural and therefore probably better for you anyway. Not worth wasting money on Virgin varieties for use on hair & skin.

You'll find small bottles of Medicated Olive Oil in Health Food shops -
DON'T BUY THEM!! It's just regular Olive Oil.

Moderators please move this post to MoneySaving Old Style.

Who said it was a silly Q? :p

I swear by Olive Oil for dry scalp / skin conditions I've got dreadlocks and it prevents itchiness. Also great for cuticles and keeping nails from splitting & breaking

Buy it from Boots pharmacy counter it's about £1.30 for about 150mls the cheapest I've found was at ASDA pharmacy £2.25 for approx 300mls. You only need a little and it lasts ages. Don't know if you can use the oil that you use for cooking as it can have a strong smell, the ones in the chemist is a bit lighter and smells lovely....

to search go to 'old style money saving thread' and click on 'search' on the pink banner just above where it says 'post'
then just type 'olive oil' in box, then you have to read thru results till you find what your looking for...good luck
  • I just use the cooking oil. After all you wash it out afterwards.
One of the poshest beauty 'secrets' is those big square lumps of olive oil soap you get in France. You use it for your hair, body, clothes - anything. Fantastic.
Olive oil is vastly underrated here.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!
