how do i ask for a discount on my wedding venue

I have booked my wedding venue for 2013 last year and was happy with the price however since we have got a new house and then my partner was made unemployeed we have cut back on a lot of things we wanted for our wedding but the venue is taking up the biggest chunk of our budget also we have been on the venues websie and the are offering the same package for £2000 less than we are paying for wedding booked for before march 2013 and ours is may, how can I ask the venue for a discout without having to change my date because we really love our venue and dont want to have to cancel.

Thanks x

Many venues offer discounts for weddings outside peak season - hence the difference between May and March at your venue.

You can always explain your circumstances to your venue and see where they can cut costs, but this far out they'll be confident they can book someone else in should you cancel (and potentiall lose deposit).

Can you move your date to out of season?

In my opinion you'll be very lucky to get a discount on something you have already agreed on. By paying a deposit (I read your other post) you have already entered a contract. I would say the venue is under no obligation to even try to bend to meet your needs.

I think the only way you could tackle this is if you go to them explain that you understand you've already agreed and accepted a price, explain the changes in your circumstances and explain you can no longer afford the price agreed. Tell them that the only options you have are for them to either lower their price or you are going to have to cancel - lose the deposit and get married in a much smaller venue. But be prepared for them to call your bluff.
  • We prob wouldnt want to cancel as we love the venue and took us such a long time to find the venue of our dreams so if push came to shove we could ask if they have any dates left in March if not we may just have to cancel and look for somewhere that fits in with our budget. I have writen an email to explain to them but I'm a bit scared to send it incase they get offended but I do understand that they are business and need to make money so may not give a discount but on the other hand if they lower the price we can have more evening guests meaning more money spen at the bar for them.
