Audio Downloads

I knew there was something I meant to ask.My friend is searching for a reasonable site for audio downloads for books which she can listen to whilst she is sewing Does anyone know of any that are reasonably priced and not just 'classic lit' She has been into her local library but they have few that catches her fancy .She likes detective type stories.I prefer to read my books apart from my Kindle ones which are mainly classical ones which I can read while in the car waiting for my DGs after school.I pop the Kindle into the glove compartment ,easier to store than a book

    Hi Jackie,

As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've moved it to the I wanna board to see if you can get some replies.

  • Our local library has an audio download service, 'books' can be 'borrowed' for three weeks at a time and you download them to your computer and there are some you can load onto a ipod depending on the format available.

Radio 4 extra is a spoken word station available on DAB and on-line, with you being able to listen to programmes for up to a week after broadcast, I use this when I'm crafting around the house and there is a wide variety of programmes from classic comedy to detective and crime stories. As the name suggests it uses the BBC archives and it's great to hear some of the old classics such as Sherlock Homes and the Navy Lark and Hancock's Half Hour.

There are sites where you can download books but I find don't find them much cheaper than buying the CDs second hand on eBay or Amazon but it depends on what you're after.

Thanks for those links. Love the idea of downloading free audiobooks, didn't know that there was such a thing! (My last audiobooks were cassette tapes!)
I'm sorry but I'm very wary of downloading anything. (My last audiobooks were cassette tapes!) can you reassure me that these are safe and really don't cost anything? What I'm saying is what's the catch? Sorry for being so hesitant but I have strict instructions from my son not to download anything because of viruses!:o:o:o

Right click a file you already have on the PC, then look for the name of your anti virus programme, with scan with, click that and in a bit it will say no virus found. Do that with any file you download and things will be OK as regards a virus infection.

Some of the files are from public domain and internet archive files. As long as you do not enter any personal details, especially financial, you will be OK there. Sometimes they ask for an e-mail address, so go to Yahoo and make one specifically for those sites, also useful for competition form filling etc

You can also find films and other items to download from here

Thanks for your help and advice, I'll certainly give it a try now.
I know that I have good protection but son has me really worried about downloading things. I'm not as thick as he thinks...:) :T
