Hi
I posted on the mortgage board and was referred here for help and advice.
Boyf moved into my house, lived here for a year during which time he paid for renovations to be done to the house, not all of them ones I wanted doing!
However, he has moved out now into own place and wants the money back that he spent on stuff at mine. Do I have to pay it all back? Bearing in mind I did not want it all doing in the first place and am single parent and student in final year of degree...cant get a bigger mortgage at the mo.
Amount is around 10k. Would I have to pay it back all at once?
Please can anyone advise?
Thanks
LJ

Hi there and welcome
Has he got proof that you had an arrangement where by he paid for repairs/decorating and then you'd pay him back?
I can't see how else he'd be entitled to the money to be honest but I am sure more knowledgeable advice will soon follow.
Take care.Leason learnt :beer:0 -
Personally I'd tell him where to go! I'd come to an agreement about the stuff you wanted, especially if you told him you didn;t want the work doing. This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!
Current Pay Off Target : £1500 :mad:0 -
I cant see you being liable, nor there being any proof that he has paid for it etc.
surely he is of sound mind and he makes his own choices what he chooses to spend his own money on
Id tell him where to go TBH, and if he really wants to he can take legal advice as to whether he would have a case, with no contract I would say very very probably he would have no leg to stand on:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

Yes theres credit card statements and reciepts(although he has left lots of the reciepts etc here)
I spoke to free legal helpline through work and they told me that if the common intention was to share then he would have a claim on my house. Well I guess it was but he moved in with me, but it didnt work out (..living together and seeing each other now and then are very different!)
It was not done maliciously or intentionally, its just unfortunate.0 -
Did you ask him to do the work?
The way I see it, he probably chose to do the work. Now he's left he should move on.Happy chappy0 -

well a B&Q recipt for example is a very differnet thing than a contract for works. wheres the proof you never gave him half?
your woprd against his, it wont stand up in court is my guess. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I agree with the op's. Did he pay you rent? If not then offset the ammoun tthat you would have been owed from the ammount you allegdly owe. IMHO you owe zip to him. Good luck ,both with this situation and with your finals.Blind as you run...aware you were staring at the sun.

He did not pay the mortgage or bills BUT he did deposit £500 a month into my bank account to cover gas, elec, food etc etc...he earns over £2500 a month so it was a drop in the ocean for him, he only had to pay for his car tax and insurance plus the storage fee for his furniture being in storage, the rest was for him to play with...and he got a 12k lump sum bonus from work whilst he was here, too. Bought himself a nice little sports car.
I feel rotten about all this and I do intend to pay him back for the UPVC stuff.
As for the rest...I dont even like the kitchen work tops, sink, hob etc...he chose them and I "comprimised" cos he was paying..he can come and take them back for me!0 -
send him a bill for any "favours" you granted him for the year he stayed there;)0
