Nan's going to be 90!

Hi I have had a look around for a few ideas but could still do with some help please.
Is there a free day you were born site that i can print a certificate from?

Does anyone have any other ideas?
I do not live near her and do not have a lot of money, but i will be visiting her on the day.
I would like to do 90 small gifts relating to her 90 years but do not really know where to start.

We have not always seen her as she is my dads mum and my parents seperated when i was only 5, 35 years ago.

Well I thought of a newspaper from the day she was born, but they aren't cheap! well, they are originals.
If you google "newspaper from the day you were born" a whole list of sites appears.

There are certificates from the year with all the headlines from £8.99

IMO I think 90 small presents would be a bit overwhelming,. why not choose a couple of special items instead?

  • Congratulations to your Nan!!! I agree with katiehound, that's a lot of presents - not to mention expensive. If they cost 50p each that's still £45. I like the newspaper/cerificate idea. Do you have any photos that she might like framed, your family maybe? That wouldn't cost a great deal.
  • Are there lots of grandchildren/great grandchildren? Im sure I remember someone on a different thread on here planning to get pictures taken of them all separately holding up a letter that spelt out "happy birthday grandma" or something along those lines and had all the photos transposed into one image then gave them a photo or a canvas etc of the photo. Sorry for vagueness as it was a while ago but hopefully you will get the drift!!

After I posted above I looked through the site I linked and saw they had interesting 'scrapbooks' for each decade with advertising posters etc- again not cheap @£30 - probably plus p&p but I think that was would be very appealing. I actually thought about treating myself!!
If you want a certificate that would be easy enough to do yourself - or a friend- I have a couple of programmes which came free on my laptop. You could even do a simple one in Word. Perhaps you could make your own scrapbook? Here are lists of events, famous people etc: http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1921.html . Print off your own personalised pages and put them in one of the books of plastic pockets.

As I munched my lunch ! I had more ideas, because I started thinking about what I could do for friends with the big"0" birthdays that was a bit different.

I came across this site which has advertising images for 20s, 30s & 40s. You can save the images you like as jpegs and print them on a certificate? as a booklet?

A friend is 65 later this month so that's what I will do adding either events from the day, the month or the year- depends which is the most interesting!

As for your nan, how mobile is she? Wonder if you could pay for afternoon tea at a local hotel/restaurant/cafe for two and send her the invite?

Another thought- what about a spoof telegram from the queen? signed by someone whose name is Queen, local carnival Queen- you get my idea.
Bet you will come up with something, please let us know

I did a photo book for my mums 80th. I begged and borrowed family photo's that told the story of the major milestones of her life - parents, siblings, employment, marriage, children, grandchildren etc. It ended with photo's of the birthday celebrations. I started it before the big day and obviously had to give her an IOU on the day for her present. It cost very little in monetary terms, took a little time and some effort (writing a commentary to link the photos) but proved to be one of my mums favourite presents - she showed it to everyone she met for months afterwards. My cover photo was a gateway in a beautiful garden - Titled '***road to 80 and finished with a long vista - onwards to 90?

  • I also did photobook for my Grandads 80th as Puddle did. It was a 'This is Your life' book and was a store of his life in the first few pages with some pictures added in along the way, then his five children, eigth grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren all had their own pages with various pictures of them throughout their life (some with my grandad in). I put them all in order of birth with their names and DOB on each page. It then ahd some general pictures at the back. It was EXTREMELY time consuming as I had to find and scan over 100 pictures... but the fact that my Grandad has shown this book to every person he possibly could, and that he still mentions how amazing it is made it all worthwhile. At such an age they dont need or want physical presents in most cases, its capturing old memories and creating new that mean the most to them.

I love the idea of afternoon tea, a photobook, a collage. And I agree that you can easier make a certificate yourself on your computer. Or check out some of the card shops like Clintons and Card Warehouse, they often have novelty gifts like this.
  • Thank you Katiehound and everyone else for all your brilliant ideas. I shall spend the next few days going through them and will post back.
    Thanks again :)

I did exactly this for my Nan's 90th last year. Just having a think as to what we did:

Pot of homemade jam - 1 gift
Pot of homemade chutney - 1 gift
    Balloon - 1 gift
    Personalised calendar - '12' gifts
Did 2 photo books - one with pics of her grandkids when young, and with scanned in old pics and sides. Each were 14 pages long, so that was '28' gifts (from HotPrints - you get a number free each month!)
My cousin contributed an airplane flight over her town which was to last 30 minutes (30 gifts!)
She had a Rolls Royce ride to the restaurant (4 wheels, 4 gifts!)
    The meal - 1 gift
Shower cap (family joke!) - 1 gift
Personalised joke Newspaper front page (1 gift)
1920's coin (would be 1921 coin for you??) and info about the year she was born - 2 gifts
The Day You Were Born info - just found out loads of facts about things that happened in history on her birthdate (not year specific, just date) and put them together on an A4 nice bit of card - 1 gift
There were also some gifts she'd asked for - new pillow (1 gift), plant and plant pot (2 gifts), 2 packs of tights (2 gifts) and 2 books (2 gifts).

    Hope that helps a bit???
