Males dressing for an interview
Comments

People who saySome interviewers will not worry if someone turned up in jeans for interview as long as they are good enough
OP - On the day turn up in trousers [pressed of course], nice long sleeve shirt [not checked/heavily patterned] which is preferably plain, clean shoes [not brown/not scuffed], and a nice neutral tie. Dress smart, understated and be reem!!
Like the name says - Less but better, never go for overkill.
Good luck and also let us know how it goes.0 -
I've gone for plenty of interviews in jeans and a nice t-shirt or top, make up done, hair straightened. Most of the time I got the job. My brother goes for interviews in jeans and t-shirt and gets the job.
I was speaking to a Production Manager who was interviewing for a Co-Ordinator position and someone came in with scruffy looking clothes, chipped nail polish and messy hair. That is a big no no, but as long as you look smart, even in casual clothes (for some industries) then that's ok. It all depends on what is industry standard.
Retail work - trousers and shirt - no real need for a suit (unless it's a nice posh shop like Harrods or designer shops)
Business work - Smart suit
Some creative jobs - Casual wear
Other creative jobs - Trousers and shirt (especially more senior positions)
Office work - general office gear (your smartest office gear)
The main thing is being comfortable. Don't wear things too small or big for you otherwise you'll be worrying about your clothes as oppose to the interview. And girls - no low cut tops! (unless you're going for a job as a stripper)

I wear suits to work so would not think about wearing anything less for an interview, I would make sure the suit was clean and my top went well with the suit, my shoes were clean and not scuffed, hair neat, minimal make up and no strong perfumes. Our MD insists on ties for the blokes and we don't do dress down Friday every day is business dress.0

Perhaps if in doubt, call the recruiter and ask - it's a reasonable question if a person is going for a casual/creative job. Personally, I'd stick to a suit even in this circumstance as it shows you made the effort, however it's best to check.0

As a few others have said it really does depend on the industry. I work in media and we also tell people we have a casual dress code when we invite them to interview. The person interviewing them will be dressed down, it's part of the culture, and we would expect them to dress the same. Also, if they already work in the industry and are coming straight from their current workplace it would make things difficult to have to change into a suit. A lot of people err on the side of caution and perhaps where a shirt and jeans rather than a t shirt but we'd not want people to dress like bankers.0

After all that, she said that it was only literally a 5minute chat to see if I was suitable for an interview with the Sales director etc. She wanted to know if I could communicate with her, and if she could communicate with me etc. I'm reading between the lines and presuming that someone has handed a CV in before and when attending the interview, they didn't match the image that the company was looking for, or it was just a complete disaster.
Maybe I should have asked her on the phone before getting suited and booted. She said she will ring later in the week, and then I will be having a formal interview. Part of me thinks she may not ring but the other part of me thinks it was positive enough and she said would, so I shouldn't have a problem.
I now understand why all the big companies have all types of application processing before the face to face interview.
Got a telephone interview on Friday. I'll start a thread on Thursday asking what I need to wear for it.0 -

Seriously, if you are 'properly' dressed for a phone interview you are likely to do better than if you do it in your underpants. It's like smiling on the phone, the other person can hear if you're smiling.Signature removed for peace of mind0
