hello everyone

long story but please bear with me.

I went to university a few years back, I completed my first year and passed, however I enrolled for the second year but because of some serious issues at home I was not able to attend university that year. in the end my first year was the last year of university and I never went back.

Then a few months down the line I get a letter from the university in writing saying I owed £3225, apparently it was the second time they contacted me even though this was the first I heard of it. I contacted the university about this issue and told them that I didn't even attend a day of university so how can they charge for it?.

They then said I had sat for 2 modules and took an exam and submitted work for one which I failed and the other which was the exam I apparently passed. I was surprised because I know for a fact I did not sit any exam or submitted any work and ask the university to prove that I sat in that exam because to me it sounded like fraud. They than changed their approach and said well because I had enrolled I was liable to pay £3225 and if I don't pay I won't be able to continue my studies. Now around this time I was depressed because of the family matters that I had at home and because I was not going to go back to university, thought not to go any further with the matter because I didn't need to study any further.

Fast forward 2 years and I receive a letter from a Debt company saying I owe £3225 and they are collecting on behalf of their client The University.

I know I messed up :( with not sorting it out back then but when you have so many things going on in your head I made the mistake of pushing the problem away because of the problems I had back then. The univeristy did say that i should have completed a leave of absence form, which i did not, but again can they still do this?
Now I have come here to get some advice to what to do next, because I'm a numpty at any thing to do with the legal system so would like some help.

Any questions?

Thank you ALL!

at what point did you tell them you would not be returning?

someone else could have had your place/ funding etc...it is possible to do direct entry to 2nd year if you have alternative qualifications. So a bit selfish when so many cannot get a place.

was the money for accommodation, fees, what? and did you claim a student loan or grant that year?

Well thats the thing, when i enrolled i did't really tell them that i was not going to attend university that year, thinking because i would't be doing an induction that it wasnt going to be problem. i only realised about this whole situation when i recieved the second apparent letter. No i took no grants or anything of that sort though i did in my first year. The course i was on had plenty of spaces on it so don't think anyone would have taken my spot. i can understand i am to blame some what, but to pay that much for something i did not do doesnt make any sense.

well, I am pretty damn sure it would have been spelled out on the enrolment form. Look at it this way: your first time doing it, university's thousandth time. You would normally be given a "last date to cancel" by which you obviously missed.

I appreciate this may not feel fair to you but you entered into a contract.

I am assuming you failed to apply for a student loan for fees and that is what they are pursuing? Is that correct?

I think you had best find a way to pay up before it gets as far as court.
