We're all told to eat less junk food and eat more healthier but anyone who tries to do this knows that in reality the healthier option is often much more expensive!
I'm not talking about going overboard, such as organic (unless it happens to be cheaper anyway) but if you look at all the BOGOF offers most are for junk food. Wholemeal or bread with grains is so much more expensive than white, which I stopped eating quite a while ago, so look for any offers around and get extra ones for the freezer.

Just recently I was alerted by MSE about the wholewheat penne pasta for 22p, which is brill as I don't like slimy white pasta. Thank you to the person who took the trouble to post the offer.

My tip for today... if cucumbers are the same price for a full one as for 2 halves... choose 2 'non-handle' halves of the longest length you can find. You'd be surprised how often you get more cucumber when buying 2 halves rather than a whole one (that's if you were going to buy a whole one in the first place!)

I've been trying to avoid 'squash' type drinks over the summer so I've been buying Value or cheapest pure orange juice and decanting it into an empty 2 litre water/pop bottle and then adding about 600mls of water to it and kept it in the fridge. OK, not as cheap as squash which I try to avoid because of the sugar or sweeteners (some are so bad for you) but a more refreshing, less cloggy drink than 'neat' orange juice out of the carton.

  • Nice One Socks_uk, I'm with you.

I have been buying the Peach and Pear Nectar juice from L!dl, cant remember how much it costs but because it contains so much of the fruit pulp it is quite thick, so I water it down with either fizzy water/tonic/soda water, generally a 50% mix, so I am getting 2 for the price of one :j

  • It's been said before but Aldi's super six and often a good deal, whole cucumbers in there are only 39p at the minute, but you do need to use their veg quite quickly as I find it tends to go off quickly. Farmfoods have large bags of chicken fillets which are 3 for £10 I think and good value to use in stir fries etc

  • I totally agree about the healthy thing. Surely if wholewheat stuff was as cheap as the white processed stuff then most people would buy them?,if they like them,of course. I do tend to push the boat out and buy the wholewheat stuff, but it must be awful if on a tight budget and not have the choice.I do use white flour, but mix it with wholewheat to keep costs down.

On Tuesday I bought a pack of Fresh Meadow organic wholewheat farfalle 500g in Lidl for 89p. Very shocked to find it there. Mind you it was in a box on the floor next to the other pasta, but did not have a price on it.
  • I have just noticed on Mr T's website that September is Organic month, lots of 3 for 2 and offers on a range of products.

Tesco had/has an offer on the butchers counter (which I thought was due to end Tuesday just gone) a whole chicken for £2.50. I bought three yesterday and disected them so I now have 6 chicken fillets, and 6 drumsticks & wings and the carcass for soup all for £7.50! It was from the actual butchers counter not the chilled fresh meat isle. Not sure when the offer will finish but we're having chicken carbonara with wholewheat penne pasta for tea tonight!

Oh, and one thing I got caught out on... we've all seen the adverts for these 'Nature Valley Bars' well me and my hubby were having a few days away last week on our (cheap travelodge) holiday and we usually find somewhere to have a full English breakfast and I bought some of these bars and 2 bunches of bananas to have one of each for dinners as breakfast usually keeps us going for a good long while. Well, when I got home I happened to have a packet Tesco value chocolate digestive biscuits in the cupboard and having looked at the nutritional info realised that the Nature Valley Bars are no better for me than the cheap packet of choc biscuits! I should really take my reading glasses with me to the supermarket!
