Haircuts at Toni & Guy. Worth it?

Is it a case of 'You get what you pay for?'

Do you/would you pay more than 'normal' for your haircut?

I'm always tempted when I go past them but the prices really put me off. I usually get my haircut at Supercuts but they seem to have such a high turnover of staff that I rarely get the same stylist twice. And I always feel rushed in there - like I'm on a conveyor belt.

i go to a lovely local salon and always have the same girl colour and cut my hair.

i wouldn't pay tony and guy prices because she is as well qualified as their stylists and she understands how i want my hair (she is a trained assessor in cutting and colouring too).

my opinion is that if you find a hairdresser you like, stick to them like glue!

It's only worth paying a lot if you're after something really special, maybe a change of hair style or a completely different cut. If all you want is your layers cutting, for example, then no way is it worth the money they charge, imo. Better to find a local salon!
  • It's a franchise, you get good and bad Toni & Guy salons and good and bad stylists within them. I wouldn't go without a personal recommendation to any salon - don't care what they're called . And I certainly wouldn't pay exgtra for a 'name'.

I get my hair cut at Toni and Guy. Yes it is a franchise but they do require all their stylists to train at their academy, and to do regular training to keep their skills up to date.

Any haircut is only as good as the stylist and I've had stylists at T and G that have been better than others. However I think it is fair to say that the worst haircut I've ever had there has still been streets better than the best one I've ever had at Supercuts or somewhere similar.

What I tend to find is that a T and G haircut will look good for several months (even if the style is then a lot longer than it was) whereas a lot of cuts or trims only look good for a few weeks. I also find it easier to blow dry my hair and have it looking good after a decent cut. When I have a less good one, then any home blow dry just looks amateurish, but with a decent cut I can virtually leave it to air dry, then run some straighteners through it and look like I've spent some time on it.

I'm with Nicki. I also get my hair cut at Tony and Guy's, but I have particularly difficult hair, and I've had some dreadful cuts at other hairdressers. I've never gone for the cheapest hairdressers either.

I started going to T & G about 3 years ago and I would never change back. My hair always looks great, even when another cut is overdue. It's also easy to look after which is a bonus.

  • I agree with the advice 'find a good cutter and stick with them'; however, my lass (who I've used for 9 yars now) has left following maternity leave, so I've had to take the plunge again! I tried one from a groupon deal - not bad, but she did the cut she wanted to give me, not the one I asked for, so I won't be going back there. No-one in the local town I trust, and my friends haven't been able to reccomend anyone special so....... I typed 'hairdresser reviews ' and the name of our local city into google, checked out the reviews, and went for a chap who has reviews on mutiple sites, from customers he's had for a long time who are submitting reviews on more than just him (ciao and simialr sites). We'll see.

(Toni and Guy didn't make the final running - at least three salons before them!)

I'm off tomorrow, and will be happy to report back!

I never liked Toni and Guy, certainly didn't think my local one was any better than where I go now. My hairdresser now is a local girl with her own salon, charges roughly 1/3 of T&G and I'm always really happy with it.

TIP. If I see someone whose hair I like, especially if they have similar hair type or a similar style to what I want........(and I can spot a good cut at 50 paces!) I always compliment them and follow-up with the questions, where did you get it done/who cuts it?

I have a shop, so it's quite easy to strike up the conversation with a customer, but tbh I would and have asked people I see anywhere! Start with a compliment and follow-up with the question; most women are only too pleased you think their hair looks good and are happy to share!
  • I've been to Toni & Guy a few times and it really does depend on the stylist - however I've never had a bad haircut there. They actually charge less than the salon I go to now (and average for any of the good salons in town), but luckily my hairdresser does home visits for long term clients so I'm able to get it a lot cheaper!

  • I get my hair cut in Tony and Guy,but I always go to their student evening where it's £10 for a cut and £20 for a colour! I have always been pleased with the results, but I'm not sure if they are superior to others. I think it's sometimes down to the actual person and their attitude because they are all taught the same.
