Doing my weekly meal planner, want something to bung in the sc- can anyone recommend an economical cut that I should go for?
Have normally gone for shanks but these don't seem to be as cheap as I recall, not done them for a few months.
All ideas gratefully received!

I use rolled and boned shoulder of lamb. Great cooked in the slow cooker as the fat dissolves.
I have a whole one (around £8-£10 in total) and get the butcher to cut it into three pieces, each one feeds 2/3.
My butcher likes advance notice to do this as it takes a while to bone, ie - don't go in on a Saturday morning and expect him to do it for you then!:hello:0 -
I find lamb expensive, but tend to buy shoulder (half or whole) as that is good for roasting and or the SC. If using a butcher, you could always ask for neck of lamb if you are making a stew or casserole.0

if you go in sainsburys , they do a value pack of stewing lamb which usually has a couple of shanks in it , its about 3 pounds for a good amount , one pack does us 2 meals for 2 people at a timeThe original janiebaby0

'Scrag end' is a cheap cut usually used for the classic Irish Stew - as with most 'cheap cuts' it needs long slow cooking (it comes from the neck). Breast of lamb is even cheaper - but very little meat on it and quite fatty - prefer a nice pork belly myself. Shoulder is a good medium price cut - half the price of leg, but just as tasty, try slow roasting it, I think Nigella has a good recipe (actually for a salad, but you could just use it for the lamb) : http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/N/nigella/bites6.shtml

Lidl's had a whole frozen leg lamb for £6.50ish on Monday.
There have been reports here that Lidl's meat is OK.

Catowen How is neck of lamb used? I've got some in the freezer from a hamper but have no idea what to do with it.
I have a slow cooker so was just going to bung it in there, but is it better in a stew then?

We do like lamb but have been buying mutton recently and is very cheap.
Sainsburys do a 600g mutton mince fresh pack for 99p:D ...this easily makes 2 shepards pie for 4 portions each. Or it would make a spagbol/chilli for 8 portions and could be frozen.
Lamb is normally heavily reduced at about 8pm is Asda if that helps. I often get their "posh" and organic lamb chump steaks which have been matured for about £1.50-normal price £6+

Thank you all, Mr Tesco does neck of lamb for a decentish price so I will give it a go and see how much actually ends up in a pack (getting it delivered to avoid temptation of things not on my meal planner) and if I can manage to add lots of nice veggies in too then my sc stew will be perfectamundo
I really like the sound of the mutton mince too, what a bargain! I work very near a sainsburys so will try and pop in at lunch time or on my way home0
