If you know the name of the village or town where your gran was born you should be able to google your way to the phone number of the relevant town hall. Phone them and ask where that record would be held and is it possible to get a copy. I don't know if you speak german or if you know someone that does who can help but I'd just ring them anyway, there's a fair chance that the person who answers the phone might 'sprechen' english!
    Good luck.
  • Do a google for "stadtarchiv XXXX" - XXXX being the town you are looking for. You may find that the details come up.

If you do contact the town archive (stadtarchiv), emphasise you are a direct descendant, the granddaughter. Otherwise certificates are not always freely available. You may also find it interesting to ask whether the archives hold any other information on your grandmother's family.

Otherwise join a genealogy mailing list for the area of Germany.

There are lots of helpful people on genealogy mailing lists and you may even find someone local in the town you are looking at who can give you information.
