Ave weekly/monthly spend if buying organic?

Options
Hi everyone!

I make an effort to buy organic where possible, whether it's fresh, tinned or dried etc. I appreciate it's definitely not the cheapest way to shop and to make the pennies go further I'm no longer buying as much meat as I used to but it would be interesting to know what other people spend?

I would say my monthly spend is £300 (that's including all my household stuff). I know that seems quite a lot to some people but I make sacrifices in other areas of spending and I'm getting loads of new top tips from reading this forum :D

I've searched through the old indexed posts but they're all quite old and the food prices are a little out-of-date now.

The end is in sight :j

We only buy our meat from farm shops and it's all free range and certified organic. We also grow our own veg and we don't use any chemicals so I guess that's organic too, but that means we don't have to buy veg from May to October (or this year it's looking like NEXT WEEK we're going ot have to start - thanks to the weather!). When we do buy we do make an effort to buy 'nice veggies'. All in all - I think we spend about £250 (not including booze). Not everything is organic though as I cook a lot of oriental dishes and curries so I can't vouch for some of the stuff I buy from ethic supermarkets.

You can save an awful lot of money buy growing your own veg (when you get everything worked out) as organic veg is VERY expensive.

Vegetarian here - part of the reason being I cant afford decent meat (organic/happy/etc) and I dont keep exact records - but I would say I spend about £30 per week on food.

By that I mean food (and coffee) only - no household goods are included in that. The food element alone (and herbal teas) is about £25 of that (ie I think my coffee must be costing me about £5 a week - as it has to be "real" - as I hate instant).

Thats with a tiny matchbox size garden:mad: - so I'm only able to grow a VERY limited indeed amount of food:( - so I have to buy a lot of fruit/veg that (by choice) I would grow myself.

So - I would say £140 per month should cover a vegetarian eating organically - but if one adds meat into that equation....dunnoe...except it would likely top £200 per month each.

Basically - I have to console myself for how much it costs me by knowing that that is a reasonable amount per se (certainly not expensive - though it would be if I ate meat) and the fact that I'm saving on healthcare costs (ie because I'm healthier than I would be if I didnt eat healthily iyswim).

have you considered a box scheme? some are quite good value. from my experience, abel and cole are good.
  • We use Woodlands Farm near Boston for an organic veg box each week (plus organic meat, etc as extras) and find them excellent, plus really well priced and overall it's less than supermarket costs!
:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A
