I find cheap tin openers and other kitchen utensils like this are useless. Which is why we got one for about £9, 2.5 years later still really good, no sign of wear. Same with the potato peeler and the pizza cutter (this is amazing, so sturdy)

Technology is different, as over time things become incompatible with computers and ipods for example. I find good expensive stuff of mine tends to get nicked :( 2 different houses, 2 break ins, expensive stuff stolen :(

Kettles doesn't make a difference in this hard water area, unless it's a Brita one, which might be my next kettle! Or I descale it once a month!

Cheap house paint is to be avoided in my opinion. You don't get a good finish (unless you like a mottled effect), you end up needing more of it and it doesn't last as long so you have to do it all over again sooner. I guess that the top brands spend lots to get a better product. It would be interesting to know if trade paint is as good the expensive brands.

I've done this in the past with TVs and computers - bought cheap ones and ended up buying cheap replacements, before finally learning to buy an expensive one and keep it.

Also bought a cheap vacuum cleaner that didn't actually vacuum anything up, now have a pricer Miele that only has to be used once rather than 3 times.

On the other hand my cheap microwave and toaster have lasted ages whilst working fine.

Perhaps there's really a balancing point between decent enough to last, without being overly expensive?
