  • Be careful which screws/coachbolts you use. Although thicker screws/coachbolts look more substantial the wood they are fitted onto is weakened if the screws are too big. I believe the rule of thumb is that the width of the screw shouldn't be any more than 25% of the size of the wood and should be installed centrally on the wood to preserve the strength of the wood. At least that's what the structural guy who works with one of my clients reckons ...
