Wanted: Broadband Wireless Router - HELP!

Can anyone give me some advice on wireless routers / modems

I have a wireless enabled Toshiba laptop (the only computer in the house). At the moment my broadband is wired but I want to make it wireless to get rid of the all the wires across the house.

I've seen this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0002LHXB6/ref=wl_it_dp/203-8995291-1911120?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1816IHLUWHD94&colid=SKVPVHEL88Z4

Some people have told me that this will do the trick as all I need to do is connect my existing modem to it and i'm away.

However, when I went into Maplin they told me that this wouldn't work and I would need a wireless router with a built in modem.

Who's right?

Cheers

Personally, as i have installed many Wireless networks in different houses i would recommend this as the probably the cheapest, easiest solutionhttp://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/109521/rb/24348174610

This has a built in modem, and a free wireless dongle for only £42!

  • Excuse my ignorance, but presumably this will be ok with my wireless laptop, i.e. I wouldn't need to use the wireless dongle as well?

    Cheers

We got our wireless router from AOL when they ran a free offer a few months a go - i think the offer has just re-started now. You pay £14.99 a month for unlimited broadband and get the box (worth around £50) free.

Ours works great and was a fab way to get the box and broadband together for very little.

SOHO - Small Office, Home Office. Not intended for 'big business'.

The one in your link will only work on cable. Maplin were right if they told you it wouldn't work, unless they never asked you who supplied your broadband and only assumed you were on a BT line. kev84's link is an ADSL router and the price will jump to over £47 after you add carriage, http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000A2IV2M/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_1/026-9260972-4069231 is what you need for £10 less, and if you can buy through Nectar Amazon eStore you'll also get some points.

I assume you are on Broadband Starter (with a USB modem) with Orange; if you subscribe to the £5 extra a month Unlimited package you will get a wireless enabled Livebox that has potential for faster speed, the 2gig download limit removed and an additional element of anytime UK and some international telephone calls included.

The benefits of these may be limited depending on your telephone use, and the total cost is against the money saving principles of this site because it is ultimately higher than your selected router from Amazon, (after 8 months!) but if the calls are of use then that could be a good alternative.

I used the ADSL router in my link before changing to the Orange Unlimited; I was paying at the 'old' rate of £17.99 so it was only £2 extra and for my telephone calls I now have to choose between Orange via the Livebox and Talk Talk via BT.
  • I've found the original one posted by kev84 on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000I1OA6G/ref=wl_itt_dp/203-8995291-1911120?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1XLFQQ28ZQFK3&colid=SKVPVHEL88Z4

Can get 10% off that price, so is that a better deal, as the Linkys one doesn't have great reviews.
