Dog Chipping who owns the dog?

is there a central place where one can find out who owns a dog, a mate has rehomed a dog from an animal center who did not know the chip was in, she took the dog to the vets who found the chip but could not tell who owns the dog ,they know its registered as lost?
Any idea where she goes from here as she has had this dog for 4 months now and doesnt want to part with it but is aware she may need to return it to someone.

There is a telephone number on there to call. I think the chip when scanned would bring up the number registered to the chip. But call petlog and they should be able to help

The info about owners is on the "Petlog" database which can be accessed by Dog Wardens, Police and I believe some vets...probably more the PDSA or RSPCA type vet.

I have had a quick look on Google but could not easily find anything.

    Good luck anyway!!!

The same thing happened to my friends aunt - got a dog from a rescue centre that was advertising them for sale (a little dodgier than your sister though) had the dog for a few months and took it to the vet who found the chip. The vet we believe contacted the previous owners and to date nothing has happened - this was at least three months ago.

Not what you want to hear but I would assume if the dog was 'stolen' or 'lost' ownership would revert to the original owner if found.

Even if the dog was microchiped the owner might not have wanted him anymore, given it to the rescue centre etc...
The vet should have been able to help you, at least guide you in the right direction, but you could contact petlog all the same. There is a site with missing dogs, I'll try to google that and see if I find it...

    Ok here are some sites:

    https://www.doglost.co.uk, http://www.nationalpetregister.org/, http://www.missingpetsbureau.com/home/index/index.aspx, http://www.lostlabs.com/

Just do a google with Missing Dog and it will all come up.

    Hope this helps!

I know you are very attached to the dog, but imagine if this dog was someone's lifeline, or perhaps they are really worried to know what happened to the dog... If this was happening in reverse to you what would you like to do / happen?

The best thing to do would be to find out who the owner is and contact them, they might be relieved to know that the dog is ok but their circumstanfces might have changed and they may not want the dog anymore.

If the vet will provide you with the chip number I can give you the phone number of the people who maintain the database. They probably won't be able to give you the dog owners details (data protection blah blah blah) but may be able to contact the owner direct.

Edited to add: I think that your friend may have every right to keep the dog even if it is chipped to owners who still want it (a lot of the time the owners aren't interested or got rid of the dog months ago to someone who didn't bother changing the chip details).

If the dog has been lost for more than 7 days and the owner has not come forward then as far as I am aware it is legally hers as dogs in law are classed as property. It really depends on what type of rescue centre the dog came from, if it was council funded kennels then the dog would have been logged as found - it's then down to the owners to make every effort to locate it within those 7 days.

If the rescue was more of an 'I look after all the waif and strays' type rescue then it may be slightly different as the dog may not have been logged as 'found' therefore giving the original owner no hope of tracking the dog down but in law if you retain a found dog for 28 days aswell as logging it with the dog warden/Police then the dog can be kept by the finder.
