Exercise for vertigo sufferer?

Hey all

Can anyone recommend an exercise that I could do despite having vertigo?

I've had vertigo since Jan, and it can be very bad at times, but other times it's dormant-ish. Before this I would go to gym 3 times a week, and do an exercise DVD. I would also do some outdoor pursuits with work. However Dr has told me no gym, no outdoor pursuits, no water based activities :(

When my vertigo is bad I can't even stand up/walk without feeling extremely dizzy.

When it's dormant I can walk ok but doing thing slike bending down, looking up and moving too quickly can bring on the vertigo!

It's driving me crazy not being able to do anything so just wondered if anyone can think of something?

I did wonder about yoga or pilates as they seem low-intensity, but have never tried so not sure whether it would be ok?

Cheers

  • That sounds absolutely horrific. Had a short burst of this a few years ago after an ear infection wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Pilates can be pretty easy going, no sudden movements but many of the exercises do focus on balance. Standing on one leg etc., If you're thinking of a class have a word with the instructor or try looking at something like the Darcey Bussell DVD and see what you think.

To be honest it's the same with yoga, quite a lot of emphasis on balance.

    Hope you're better soon.

I had a friend who suffered from Vertigo she eventually had some manipulation for it (a doctor moved her head in differing positions) and after a couple of sessions she hasn't suffered since.. not a nice thing to suffer from

My friend is in the States so obviously paid for her therapy, I talked to her about it yesterday and it wasn't just her head.. the therapist and his nurse laid her down on a massage table then she had to do things like hang her head down for x mins , then they lifted her onto her side for Xmins , well you get the picture they manipulated her body and head to move the fluid in her ear to get it where its supposed to be and she said much to her suprise it worked perfectly , I think she had to sleep sitting up in bed for the first night after her treatment.. good luck I hope you don't have to wait to long..
