Hi again,
Have just registered to do this online and reclaim the VAT on my mileage, and am stumped already! The options to register are:-
As I am not any of the above, but an employee, what am I supposed to select?
Corporation tax
Self assesment for self employed / sole traders
Self assesment for partnerships
PAYE for employers
VAT
Thanks in advance

I meant tax, it's because I was just looking at the word VAT on the website I typed the wrong thing.
Still doesn't help me to know which option I am supposed to select as I am not any of those things?!
I apologise for not being knowledgeable on the subject, but that is why I came on here to ask for advice, not to be laughed at for not knowing!

Try the P87 form
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p87.pdf
Or you can phone your tax office and do it over the phone.0 -
Thanks R65, I started to fill one of those in, but apparently I have to do a self assesment as my expenses come to more than £2500...0

Hi Claire, I too have just completed this claim for the first time via self assesment online.
It is a bit confusing, but I eventually managed to fathom it out and put my claim through.
I was paid 13ppm and covered just under 12k per annum business miles.
Taking away what my company had paid me from the approved allowance rate of 45ppm gave me an expenses amount of £3388.
Ok to claim log in to self assessment and file a return for tax year 11/12
Most of the form you do not have to complete.
You need to get to the page title "Employement" and enter the details off your P60.
In the employment section, under employment expenses, Business travel and subsistence expenses - put in your total expenses (in my case £3388). I also attached a copy of my mileage records in the other supporting information tab.
It should then calculate what you are owed and you can electronically send it off.
3 days later I was sent a letter telling me my tax code had changed by the amount I had entered from the standard 8105 to 1149 - HMRC state they pay you the relief through your tax code of over £25000 -
Hi,
Can some one help me please! I've tried doing my self assessment, but do not know where I put how many miles I've done, how much I've been paid and what the difference is that I'm claiming back.
I know what the figures are, just don't know where to put them on my return.
I'm employed as a community carer and get 15p a mile, I just want to be able to claim back what I think I'm owed...

Hi guys, sorry for the thread necromancy but this thread seems to be the best i've come across and rather creating a new one i thought i would pipe up here.
I have recently been made redundant and now I'm looking at getting as much money to tide me over as possible. I didn't know about this tax relief you could claim so I'm all over it.
Only issues I have are that as I'm claiming back for 4 years worth (apparently the max) mainly for my last job (before got made redundant) I am not entirely sure of the mileage per year let alone having a detailed breakdown of each trip which I have read elsewhere that you need. (i've spoke to HMRC and they say that they rarely need any breakdown anyway)
So the issue i have is that I only have vague ideas of the number of miles I travelled each year (ie maybe to the nearest 1000) as most years i did about anything from 8000-12000. I've no way of proving any of it. Plus my old employer is terrible for getting back to me with details of my previous expenses claims. (not entirely sure the company is even still around in its previous form!)
Any advice? Is it a really bad idea to put a rough estimate on mileage down? Will they check with the employer for these figures before doing anything (could delay claim for months at this rate) etc etc etc.
