True cost of getting a woodburner fitted

  • When you say chimney zonky, do you mean an actual chimney or the flue lining? Was the plumber's cost just to connect the flue with the cold tank in roofspace and would this not mean playing about with the flue?
  • Ok now I'm very confused - got talking to someone who told me you don't actually need a flue just a hot plate - is this true?
  • My take on the "Flue" issue is;
If you do not have a chimney, you'll need a double skin flue installed,
If you do have a chimney but old and not sealed up very well then a single skin flue would be sufficient
Any house with a well sealed chimney would get away with the hotplate which just seals of the chimney.

Well that's what I've been told!
  • we recently had an 8kW wood burning installation by County Down Stoves & Flues:
    countydownstovesandflues.co.uk (add the www's)
and they were absolutely excellent. We had a liner put down as our chimneys are from 1890. There are different flue qualities to choose from depending on what you're burning and how long you want the guarantee. Also we opted to have a secondary outside air inlet which makes the stove run like a blast furnace and leaves virtually no ash. The folks are really knowledgable and easy to talk to.
  • Maybe a stupid question.....

But what is the advantage of a wood burner? (apart from the astethic value) Spending 3k getting one installed doesnt really seem like a great money saver, as most oil bills are less than a grand a year.

    Or am I missing something?

If you have a lot of trees and don't mind being a lumber jack and stacking wood to thoroughly dry then you have a cheap fuel. Room sealed wood burner with external air supply does wonders to the SAP rating of the house as wood is a renewable source and virtually CO2 neutral.

  • Or if, like me, you live beside a mountain, park, or wooded area, you've got an unlimited amount of wood you could forage.

I live beside a school, I doubt the Headmaster would want me burning children :-)

    hi all

Wood burning stove are much more efficient than open fires - some as great as 80+%. Open fires are about 30% efficient. I got mine for several reasons
    1. It was in the middle of a major house refurb and if it wasnt done now it would never be done.
    2. i really, really missed having a fire in the house (prior to this only oil) and a stove was easier than an open fire
    3. After the last two winters I needed a way of heating the house if there was a powercut
    4. The efficiency to the new system means that it is cheaper (slightly) than oil - and thats with me buying all my fuel not foraging for it. Oil is set to increase again so i have flexibility to heat my house now.

  • Does anyone know a solid fuel plumber who could hook a stove up to heat the water or study the feasibility for this?
