sharing christmas presents / joint gifts

  • father christmas often brings shared things in our house for us all - last year it was monopoly junior, jenga and another board game but they also get their own stocking.

this year they have shown an interest in walkie talkies so I think that might be the present this year, though I might unbox them and wrap them seperately. they both love the toy kitchen things too and love getting things to share for that too. and happyland sets. to be fair they often forget whos is whos.
  • I managed to get M&S vouchers early this year from SKY, just had to sign up for their 3 services package. I hope to use those for a lot of the gifts this Xmas.

Other than that I think my wife & I will be making a few presents, she loves her arts and crafts, and does some great designs :)
  • I think it could work.

We've given ours joint gifts in the past (dolls house, go-kart) but also gave them their own gifts too.

my 2 have a 6 and half year age gap and get shared pressents sometimes when its a big thing like ps3 or xbox this year there not because they want diffrent things
  • My brother and I have a three year age gap (I'm the eldest) but we always had a "main shared present" from our parents, and we absolutely loved it. We also had individual "main presents", so it never felt like we were being dismissed as individuals, which I imagine could be a problem in some sibling relationships (like twins). I think it just makes sense, especially if it's something like a games console or a doll house. :)

My 2 are 2.5 years apart and always get a shared present as well and their individual ones. This year will be something make-y as we are away and they will need downtime!!
“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”
  • I am kind of in the same boat but it is for my friend and her partner. I want to try and get them something more personal but knowing where to look is proving difficult. Obviously I have a budget but would still like to get them a nice joint pressie this year.
Any useful links I could be looking at?

  • I have 2 daughters aged 3 and 5 and they also share a room. They have got sharing presents before for Christmas and I think this is a good idea, especially for more expensive items such as a wooden kitchen and dolls house but it has also worked for smaller items like games. They play with the same toys and tend to share everything - they don't really know whose toys are whose! Also both their birthdays are in the same month so they sometimes get shared presents for birthdays too and they have no problems with that either!

It can work, there would quite often be times my brother and I for example both wanted the same DVD, so my mum would just get one between us instead of having 2 copies.

All the children mentioned so far are quite young, but we were much older when this started happening. We've found that when it comes time that one or more of the children are moving out into their own homes, it can be a bit of a nightmare trying to sort out who gets which of the shared things!
