Afternoon Tea in London

Can anyone recommend anywhere to go in London for Afternoon Tea please?
It is for my Mother's 60th birthday so I want it to be special. I have heard the Ritz is a bit touristy now. Although I am prepared to pay for the privilege of eating somewhere nice, I would also like to know that you get more than a couple of little fairy cakes - lots would be good!
Grateful for any recommendations.
Many thanks

Harrods - if she loves macaroons and champagne. Everyone I know who's been to the Savoy raves about it. The scones at the National Gallery are the best I've ever had.0

I had a lovely time at Fortnum and Mason a year ago when my Mum took me for a treat. Good choice, and very nice food. It was also half as busy as Harrods usually is, so it's nowhere near as touristy, and no waiting around to get a table.0

for my 21st birthday a number of years ago we went to the Savoy for afternoon tea. It was beautiful.
Mum had mentioned it was my birthday and the pianist played a happy birthday tune when our champagne arrived!
I would highly recommend it.
Alternatively, as an engagement treat me and two grilfriends went to the Balmoral in edinburgh for Afternoon tea. Yummy and yummy!
I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this responser.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!

I'd definitely recommend Claridges. It's not cheap but I don't suppose tea anywhere like that is. I've been a couple of times & it's a great experience. The decor is fabulous and the cakes / sandwiches are yum!

The Ritz is not as touristy as is made out - but it depends on when you go. During the summer, just about all of London is "touristy" as they are trying to attract foreign visitors. Between October & April, it's not so bad.
My vote would be the Ritz, but very closely followed by Fortnum & Mason.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

My little sister bought my mum a voucher for tea at the Ritz last birthday. She absolutely loved it! She had always said that one day she would have afternoon tea there.
Though I have heard that Fortnum and Mason is very good, though very expensive!!"I've fallen down a hole" - said in best Monty Python voice-over.0
