Thanks for the info. As asked previously, all I wanted to know was if it was legal, if I had a chance of getting the money back and who could possibly help. So far, I've had more ridiculing and comments like "what did I expect" and "take responsibility for my actions" than valued input.
I have taken responsibility for my actions. I threw away many tens of thousands of pounds knowing upfront the potential outcome, but at least my mortgage was settled, something I feel was quite a responsible decision.
I'm looking for help, if there is a chance. If not, I have no problem succumbing to fate.

Please don't feel that we aren't here to help .... we are ... and I empathise with your situation as I'm sure others will ...
However, the bank do have a duty to protect their assets, it sounds as though you may have already been in a repayment programme with them (other than the standard contractual one), coupled with the fact that you aren't currently uk resident (& that they held no os tracing address), they really had little alternative than to proceed as they have.
To answer your initial q yes Halifax's actions are permissible. So the best way to see this, is that you have cleared your Halifax cc debt, and the property wasn't sold at a loss, so you won't have that debt also hanging round your necks .. and thats got to be a plus !!!
Plus Mrs Intexim still has her equity (albiet currently with the court).
Try & see the positives ... it makes life that more sunnier ...!!
I wish you well ...
