Freedom travel bus pass.Applying?

My wife reaches retirement age next month.Do you have to wait until the start date to get the freedom bus pass from the post office or can you apply earlier? and how long does it take to get thanx?

Free bus travel, to the best of my knowledge, is handled by the Local Authority. I've never heard of the Post Office doing anything about it but you never know. Probably depends on the area.

In my case, I simply went to the council's web site, downloaded the form, sent it back with photos etc. and got my bus pass before my 60th birthday.

[I never use the bus, you must understand. But I keep it so I can save money on 'OAP' entrance to various places].

Well, I thought I might look around. In my county, it is handled by local district councils. But it seems that in majority of London, you have to take your application to the Post Office. As this Link to a webpage explains.

You will need to take your application to the Post Office, unless you live in one of the following boroughs:

Barking & Dagenham - 020 8227 2334
Camden - 020 7974 6435
Sutton - 020 8770 4537

It would give us better idea on what they should do depending on which county they lives in anyway.

In the greater London area normally u get it @ the post office. Lately u do not qualify on your 60th birthday as it is now being phased in to coincide with the new retirement dates. There is a website where u can input your retirement date which will give you the latest info. (google)
