drinking chocolate powder

Options
Does anyone know the proportions of cocoa powder to sugar in drinking chocolate powders (not the instant kind with milk powder). I buy a tin a week, and wondered if it would be cheaper to make my own.

It's hard to say exactly because it will depend on how good your cocoa is and how sweet you like your drink. The ratios may be on the tin as % ingredients. I'd buy cocoa and experiment - make it like the package says, sweeten to taste noting how much sugar you use and there you go.

Or hunt for hot chocolate mix on google - there are lots of suggestions, but again brand of cocoa and personal preference re sweetness will still apply.

OK - the tin says is contains "at least 25% cocoa solids" so I'll start there then.

I tried that but the only ones there included milk powder, and I don't drink cow's milk.

    Thanks for your help. :T

Ah, didn't know the no dairy thing - Google "vegan hot chocolate mix" and you get stuff like this:

well as I use only one teaspoon of cocoa (and get a dark really chocolaty taste) to about 3 teaspoons of 'drinking chocolate (which is still quite pale and tastes more of milk) I would say that cocoa is at least 3 times stronger than drinking chocolate. I know the drinking chocolate looks more of a bargain (bigger tin) but actually cocoa is more economical as you dont use as much.
just looked on my cocoa tin and the ingredients are - cocoa solids. its the Cadbury Bournville one - I found my dairy allergic son could actually have this with no ill effects, if it was made up with soya or rice milk. plus I could make him chocolate cake with it!
and the instructions say half to one teaspoon per mug.

I think it is definitely cheaper to buy the cocoa powder and add sugar to your taste. You will know exactly what goes into it too, no fillers or chemicals.
I use a teaspoon of cocoa, a tsp of molasses and 1tsp of tahini to make a milkshake for my son almost every day.

Cocoa is full of antioxidants too.

Based on using 1 tsp cocoa powder to 3 tsp sugar I costed it out, and it would save me the grand total of 40p per 500g tin of drinking chocolate, so not that much cheaper really.
