The Unspoken Rules - How to get our money back if we make a mistake

I'd like to start a thread where we record the rules that we come across; rules companies are so well aware of but do not impart so that we do not get our money back!

Today a friend of mine got in a bother ordering from ODOPO 2 non transferable -non refundable tickets. The dates had to be changed (error outside the scope of this discussion).

Total amounted just over £500.

Following 2 calls to the travel agency, the airline company, my friend was facing the complete loss of the flight cost .... until finding an article on the Telegraaf web site regarding flight cancellation.

Should a person cancel his/her flight, he/she is entitled to the full refund minus an administrative fee of usually £25 of the Tax on the ticket.

Result: Call back the travel agency and after mentioning her rights as a customer, my friend got a refund of £224.

What are we learning here: that there are rules / laws that the customer service fully know about and they refuse to disclose this information / they refuse to volunteer this information. How can they sleep at night

Has anybody seen the "Incredibles" and doesn't it remind you of the old lady advised which forms to fill in & Mr Incredible fired as a result. This is absolutely incredible that the agent knew the rule and even faced with a very distressed caller did not impart this info.

  • I would imagine that Opodo did not in fact refund the ticket prices purely the tax and charges.

That's correct they refunded the tax minus admin fee

I am not happy though about the call centre attitude. My friend called twice and pleaded. At no time did the call centre staff mentionned that she was entitled the refund of the taxes. We had to find this information ourselves.

As soon as mentionned to Opodo, the guy on the phone was absolutely providing all information on the amount etc... Don't you tell me that they don't know about the rule. They just choose not to tell.

if a customer cancels and does not claim back the taxes over the phone then it is bonus for the travel company. Absolutely disguting attitude

  • You were implying in the first post that Opodo refunded part of the fare due to your complaint.
    They did no such thing.
