SRJ TalkTalk - wrong address?

Options
Hi everyone, I've heard that you're really helpful with these sort of problems so hope you may be able to give me some advice :)

Last week I received a letter from SRJ debt collection, the usual no info, trace letter. It was addressed to me (as Miss A Nother, not full first name) but the actual address was incorrect, it was addressed to next door. My house is originally an extension of next door but is a completely separate address, and we have a letter after our number (eg. next door is no. 5, we are 5a). They have only used the number and not the letter in the address.

I have since gotten their second standard letter, saying that I owe TalkTalk £140, once again this is addressed to next door.

First of all, next door is currently unoccupied so I am only receiving these letters because the post man is being vigilant, is it worth ignoring these letters on the basis that they have not contacted me correctly? From the research that I have done on SRJ, it sounds like they keep hounding you regardless of the debt having been dealt with, so I'd rather not give them my actual address if I can help it!

I'd like to add that I am not trying to get out of this debt on a technicality, I dispute this debt completely as it's due to failings on TalkTalks part - basically they continued to charge me for several months after the account was cancelled when I moved, I spoke to them several times on the phone and each time they apologised, acknowledged their error and said it wouldn't happen again. I gave them my new address, so have no idea why SRJ haven't got the address right anyway!

I would rather discuss this solely with TalkTalk, by letter only as it's obvious that their call centre staff are completely incompetent at dealing with my account, is it possible to do this or are TalkTalk only contactable by phone?

Apologies if this is long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible, thank you for any advice in advance :)

    Hi

To be honest if its your debt then I would probably correct them on the address (or write back using your real address). If someone does move in next door or you have a temporary postie and you stop getting these letters then there is always a danger you could miss something important - such as court papers.

I would certainly only deal with the account in writing and not bother trying to sort it out on the phone.

Maybe write back to SRJ, state that this has already been disputed with talktalk and talktalk have confirmed no balance is due (they should then pass it back to talktalk).
Then write to talktalk and go through what was agreed on prvious phone calls (give dates of the calls if you can) and ask them to write back to you to confirm that no balance is due.
You might also want to check your credit file and if they've marked anything negative I would add in to your letter that you want this correcting.

  • Thank you Tixy, yes that does make sense.

How do I check my credit file? Does it cost money and if so could I insist on TalkTalk reimbursing me for checking? Seeing as it is their errors that have lead to this.

It costs £2 per credit reference agency, and you probably need to check both experian and equifax. So £4. Don't think they'll reimburse you though.
The alternative is both have free 30 day trials you can sign up to - but you need to remember to cancel within 30days so that you don't get charged ongoing.

  • Ah, that's ok, I was just thinking that if it was going to cost me lots of money then they ought to pay for it. Thanks once again for your help :)

Do this through Quidco or topcashback and get £5 each from Experian/Equifax :)
