Not trying to be picky but if the OP had asked about what is or isn't excessive 'fluid' I would have thought she were referring to urine or blood. Discharge is the correct term for what she is asking about, ive always known it as that. Using that word does not refer to something abnormal.

OP I think you are right to check with your gp and he/she is the one who has decided its worth checking out with a gyno so you wouldn't be wasting anyones time.
