  • Thanks Jim I have been thinking about this. My work base is opposite a Lidl and have been buying milk from there £1 for 4 pints rather than £1.50 from Tesco. When I go back to work in September will be trying to get much more of the shopping from there, I just need to work out how to shop very quickly to get back in time for my husband to go to work! There is also a Iceland in the next town but it closes at 5 and my husband goes to work as soon as i get home (we have a tag team approach), maybe I could do Iceland on a Sunday.
Every little helps, though for us this first little is hopefully going to make an initial bigger difference

Would be really interested to here other peoples experiences with tesco nappies (our only local supermarket). I tried Asda nappies 4 years ago and had a bad experience when I was out for a family birthday meal. My son was sat on my knee when he filled his nappy which missed the nappy completely and landed in my lap! Since then have been using pampers or huggies depending on which is on the best offer but am prepared to give own brand nappies another go!

Just to add there's a thread on the Marriages and Families board about supermarket nappies at the mo which you may find useful.

Hi, just wanna add lidl happiest were my preferred brand when son was in them. Never leaked and cheaper, I preferred them over pampers. Also ones were good too. Also, 4 pints milk £1 at our lidl. For freezer we stock up at farmfoods, cheaper and can use vouchers we always get through the door. Keep going, it all helps.

Just a thought - as you and your huisband seem to work opposite shifts, so that one of you is at home when the other isn't - could you share one mobile phone, the person at home using the house phone instead of the mobile?
Also, your phone/internet package is expensive - several cheaper deals than that about. We're on TalkTalk and pay about £25 per month for landline, internet and calls (24 hour free calls to landlines) and you can specify certain other numbers (such as your mobile) to get a cheaper-than-normal rate on those. Other providers with similar packages are around, too.
Maybe you could retain the PAYG mobile and only use it in extreme emergencies, use the contract mobile when out at work and the house phone for all other calls. That, together with changing your internet/phone provider, could net you around £30 per month, I would say.
(If you change phone/internet supplier, remember to cost in the landline rental - some headline prices ignore this while others include it in the price. You also need to look at the price they will charge AFTER the initial honeymoon 3 or 6 month intro period.

    Hi hon

I know we are throwing lots at you - but well done for taking the first step.

I am on slightly less income than you - but I have only 2 kids and no OH. Using the skills, tips, hints, tools and "ahem" persuasion on here I am within a whisker of knocking a £10K deb on the head - so don't panic, it can be done but it is a marathon and not a sprint.

It takes time, a plan and a determination to get there - but you will

Hi mumindebt and welcome to the forum,

Very few of us would be on the forum if we hadn't been a little wreckless with cash, so don't beat yourself up about it. The important thing now is to deal with the debt and you have taken the first step by posting your statement of affairs. I pretty much agree with what the others have said and would also add batch cooking, cooking from scratch and taking advantage of bogofs as much as you can. Also follow the advice from MrsTus and have a look at the old style boards.

Good luck and well done on taking the first step

I felt stupid too, but we are not, just human, I wish you well love, be strong and you will get there. YOU CAN DO IT

Well done on opening the mail at last! Have been there and dreading the post is a really awful feeling, once you start working though things it isn't easy but I don't think it is ever as bad as the anxiety of the unknown.

You have had some really good advice here so far so haven't really anything to add except good luck and welcome x
