How to get statement of earnings from previous employer?

I am 24 and have worked since the year 2005. Unfortunately through a mixture of naive ignorance and disorganisation I have lost the majority of wage slips and end of year certificates etc.
I have just read employers legally have to supply a statement of earnings on headed paper for 6 years after you were employed is this correct?
When I was a student I worked at Morrisons part time in a number of locations, would I have to write to each individual store I worked at? Or somehow find out where their HR/Payroll is based?
Anyone know of a template letter to reaffirm the fact they legally have to supply me with this info for each year I worked with them?
Thanks

Employers are only required to keep records for 3 years. Their only legal obligation to supply you with the information is as set out in the Data Protection Act.
If you really need the info, you could call HMRC and ask them to send you a letter with details they hold on record for you for those years. If you need the info because HMRC don't have it and have asked you to supply it, then you're goosed.0
