My Slow Cookers Cracked up!

Is it safe?

My porcerlain pot for my slow cooker has cracks all over the outside. The inside isn't showing any cracks.

I really want you all to tell me it is ok but deep down i know i am going to have to get a new one.

My big fear is that it will crack totally, leaking its contents into the inner section, shorting the electricity and setting the flat on fire!

    Oh no!

My best guess would be that the most likely thing that would happen is that because the glaze is cracked, the heater would end up eating the pot instead of the food and rather than a house-fire you'd simply come home to undercooked stew.... still not nice though and if I were you I'd probably try to get a new pot for your existing cooker (you could try https://www.freecycle.org to see if anyone has a spare) or invest in a new slow cooker.

Argos has the cookworks one at half price at the moment doesn't it? ;)

How long have you had it? Can you try taking it back?

If you really have to get rid of it I saw one in Asda yesterday for £17 and in Poundstretcher for £9 but I think they were sale items so be quick if your going to buy one.

Something similar happened to my two previous slow cookers - both of them were the cheapo 3.5 litre Cookworks one out of Argos. Was yours one of these by any chance? I considered them a fire hazard - liquid had started to seep through the cracks into the metal casing of the cooker. The liquid of course evaporated and went quite thick. IMO (and it is only my opinion) that was dangerous and potentially a fire hazard. So they got chucked.
  • Hi SnowyOwl, funny you should mention the 3.5L cookworks one..... guess i better not get another one of these!!

    Hi BusyGirl

I had each of them for about a year - they both started to develop cracks after about three or four months, but it took the same time again for the liquid to seep through to the outside of the pot. I was using them regularly - maybe three, or perhaps four times a week, week in and week out.

Maybe if anyone is going to press ahead with the Argos one it'd be a good idea to get the insurance which I think is £1.49. This is mentioned on another thread in Old Style (if I wasn't lazy I'd go and find it and put a link in, ahem!) and lasts for three years. The Argos one is still good value, and for someone who wants to see if they'd use a slow cooker without spending a fortune on an expensive model then it's probably still worthwhile - but just keep an eye out for the hairline cracks and keep the insurance document safe.

If you know anyone with a makro card, makro are doing a brushed stainless steel delonghi slow cooker with a dark brown crockery pot for £14.99 ex vat and its a 5 litre capacity, has high, low and keep warm settings. It is an oval one as opposed to the round ones, so a longer joint can be cooked in it
