Increase in credit card limit

Options
Hi All,

I am looking for some advice please. I have seen the various adverts and had phone calls about the PPI reclaiming but one call I had last week had led me to ask a question.

I have never taken out PPI on any credit card. I have always had cashback cards and over the years have made a fair amount of money on them always repaying in full every month.

I had a call from a company which I think was based in Bristol, I googled them while I was on the phone and found various replies to a thread on here saying they were basically useless and rip offs as they charge a £250 fee to even start looking into your claim.

I told them that I'd never taken out PPI on any cards but they asked about the limits of my cards being increased without me asking for it to be done. This has happened with a card I have had in the past, and they told me although the account is now closed I can still claim as I didnt ask for them to put my card limit up.

I also mentioned to them that on a certain day I was trying to make a purchase and I hadnt realised I'd almost reached the card limit so when my card was declined I called the number on the card who told me I was at the limit. After about a 5 minute phone call they added approx 2k to my card limit just via the call and my card then worked again. This Bristol company told me that also should not have been allowed as I should have signed an agreement prior to the limit being raised.

I'm not overly bothered about making more money out of the cards than I already have as I am guessing it would be a very long-winded process but I wanted to know if there is an actual claim for this kind of thing as well as the normal PPI or was this company just trying to get me on their books?

Any answers appreciated.
Thanks, K.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a credit limit being increased, whether upon request or automatic.

It is reason typically given out by scam companies to try and get money out of you. Could quite possibly even be advance fee fraud on their part.

They were lying to you. You do not need to sign an additional agreement for a limit to be increased and there's no problem doing it over the phone. Under current conventions you should be informed of a planned unrequested increased and offered the chance to opt out if you don't want it. And requests by you to reduce your limit should always be accepted.
  • Thanks very much! I had a feeling they were just trying to get me to sign up. Horrible company.
