How low can they go?

Hey all

Was out last night and made a new 'acquaintance' in my mate's wife's best mate's girlfriend...

Turns out she works for a debt collection agency - no ide which one. But she's in charge of tracking down folk who have disappeared without paying their debts.

She was saying that once, in order to track a client down she somehow found his band's website - which had no contact detail on it except for an email address. She then created a page of her own, pretending to be a music agent, and emailed this guy pretending that she loved his band so much, she wanted to take him on and asked for his contact details.

He replied, and whammo - was caught.

Now I'm in no way saying it was right of him to just run off leaving a trail of debts behind him. But JEEZO!!

The problem, as I see it, is that, whilst no one can fault her enthusiasm, how would she feel if someone else used a similar tactic on her? It may well be that this guy was openly avoiding his responsibility - in which case she has 'earnt' a few brownie points with her employers. What if the guy were genuinely unaware of this deb, or the debt was wrong.
I wouldn't like to know that someone was openly 'boasting' about their 'tactics' in this way.
Still, what goes around, usually comes around - she certainly won't be able to complain if she, for whatever reason, falls into debt and someone else uses a similar tactic on her.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

  • I have some personal experience of the lengths to which these people will go. We have an unusual surname so periodically we get threatening letters from DCAs who send out these speculative letters on the off chance that we may know something about the person who owes money!

Long before I joined this forum and read about some of their despicable tactics I would NEVER give any information other than to state categorically that the debt did not belong to me or to my DH. Although we have debts we have always managed them so I know this is true.

One particularly nasty piece of work threatened to call at my home to check out what I was saying - I told him that my DH was ill and should not be subjected to stress (true) and that if he was upset by a visit from the DCA I would hold the caller personally responsible and sue him. He said "you can't do that!" I replied that I would be happy to let the courts decide who was in the right at which point he rang off and we have never heard from that particular company again.

This was my thoughts exactly. It's almost as if she's forgotten it was an ordinary person she was looking for - not some mass murderer...
