Job hunting on a DMP

Options
Hello everyone,

Over the last year I have been looking for new job to increase my wage and at the same time the chance to relocate back to London.

Finally, after being in the wilderness, I seem to be getting responses back from recruitment agencies that request you register with them first. Because a short notice return train ticket from Leeds to London cost approx £120, I normally spend 8 hours on the coach to keep the cost down (and it is the only one I can afford). This is for a 45/60min registration.

While, I understand this is the way agencies work, I feel very fustrated by it all, as I would prefer to save that travel money for when I am going for an actual interview.

How do other people deal with it? I wish I could ask the CCCS for an interview allowance, but even then £100 would take most of the amount that I am currently giving them.

I know there is no real answer to this, except for a magic carpet, but I think I just needed to rant a little.

Thank you !

Susanna

If I see any magic carpets on sale I'll let you know!

It is frustrating though. Can you not register with the agencies via phone/internet? I assume they mostly don't have local offices somewhere nearer to you where you could go to register?

What about trying to make appointments with say 4 or 5 agencies all in one day to register with them all - perhaps even booking those appointments in 2-3 weeks in advance so you can try to get a cheaper advance train ticket?

    Hello Tixy,

    Thank you for your reply.

In my experience, you can send them your email and talk to them over the phone, but at some point, before they send you for an actual job interview, they will always will need to see you first.

I have also tried to book in visits in advance, but you can very rarely get them at the same time, and these days you are normally only called in if they have a job on there books. So 2 weeks might be too late, as the role may have already been taken.

But thanks away...those darn magic carpets sales are very hard to find these days ;-)
