A friend of mine showed me something very similar to this recently and was horrified....she genuinely didn't realise the irony that 5 mins later she went out for her regular cigarette break!

I read your link, did you?

That list is relevant to the USA - most of those are already banned in UK & Europe.

Yes, even the items that are available over here have different ingredients to meet the different food standards.

    So, panic over then?!

    Interesting.

As someone who is a bit of a health freak, i'm still learning about what to avoid and probably still will be.

Frustrates me that the majority of todays foods contain so many bad things and most smaller shops don't cater for those that wish to eat well.

Very scary what is in our food and drink.
  • I don't follow the literature on food so I am not a big authority, but I am only aware of any actual evidence of a health risk in one of the ten on the list. But we all know about the risks of stress, so it is entirely possible that worrying about food additives might be harmful than the additives themselves.

I find it helps to remember the saying 'the dose makes the poison'. There is nothing that can't be dangerous if you eat enough of it. The main reason processed foods aren't healthy is that they have too much of one ingredeint - salt, fat, sugar or whatever. All of which are perfectly fine in moderation. Eat a balanced diet and keep the processed stuff to a minimum and you'll be fine. Small levels of additives are the least likely candidates to do you any harm.

Some folk wouldn't agree with that - check out the Food Intolerance Network which is an australian site has international following and lots of useful information about food additives and how they're often hidden.

Ha! I have a friend who will only eat organic, non-processed additive-free food etc. She is a nightmare to go shopping with and is forever lecturing people about what they eat. She also smokes 40 a day...

There are millions of people eating tonnes of food. It isn't surprising problems arise. But to look at it another way - there is no evidence of any health benefits from organic food. And people are living longer and longer. Overall food additives can't be doing that much harm. But thanks for drawing that website to my attention, I'll have a look.

Well, I'm too chicken to read the link! I get scared enough by stuff that is supposed to be safe!

I can say though (and more of a message to others who like me are easily wound with anxiety and tend to dwell on these sorts of things!) that life is about living, if we live in fear we don't live as freely and to some it can almost ruin your life to do so. As much as being wary can be helpful, being scared all the time is just as unhelpful as its just as destructive but in another way: your quality of life. This I think is sadly something many of us take for granted.
