Help! Debt Collection letter

Not sure i've put this in the right forum, but I need help!!!

In December I received a letter from a company called Intrum Justicia claiming that I owe £25 for my Ebay account. I had recently paid my Ebay account so I assumed that the first letter had crossed with my payment (my ebay account balance is now nil).

I then received another letter saying the same, so I responded with a letter saying check your records, I have now paid it, do not acknowledge this debt etc etc.

Today I have received a letter from a solicitors acting on behalf of Intrum Justicia, still claiming I owe this money, and threatening CCJS and all sorts, it also says they have been instructed not to enter into discussion with me or to make any arrangement for payment of the amount due.

What on earth do I do next? I don't owe them anything but its pretty clear they aren't going to let it drop. I know £25 might seem a small amount but its a lot to me, and to be fair - I don't owe it anyway.

Help!!!!

I would let them take you to court - although I seriously doubt that even these 'low-life vultures' would go to the hassle of issuing a Court Summons for £25.00.
However - should they decide to do this, you MUST be issued with a County Court Summons - on this summons there will be a form on which you can submit your defence. If you have paid the debt, then the 'judge' will dismiss the case and IJ will get their just desserts.

  • try contacting Ebay. It seems that there's been a mix up somewhere and the DCA hasn't been told that it's been paid. Get proof of payment and send a copy to the DCA.

  • Thank you to both of you.

They certainly know how to word their letters, they are really threatening and intimidating. I have emailed Ebay but had no reply yet.

The original ebay bill was only £15 so I don't know where they have got the extra tenner from (I'm guessing fees of some sort). I will print out the screen showing my clear ebay account balance and send them that too.

    Thanks again

    Hey Shady,

I'm dealing with another arm of their collections people. I told them thanks for bringing this matter to my attention and that ebay do not mention any late payment charges and that I'd brought my account up to date.

I asked for them to take me to Court over their unlawful charge of £8.

They phoned and tried to threaten me down the phone, I replied thanks for calling at 8.30, I'll speak to a Solicitor and wait for you to issue the Court Papers.

I'm waiting on their next letter, took them 2 months to reply to mine by calling

    Help!!!!
Double check that this is in fact a letter from a genuine solicitor. Sometimes, firms like this will "dress up" a letter to make it seem more official than it really is. Check for things such as similar contact numbers, addresses & names etc. In my experience, genuine solicitors will not threaten all sorts of action in their initial contact with you. And, usually they're willing to listen to any form of proposal to pay any sum owed.

  • Hi Shady, try not to be too worried about this. I too have had inturim justica chase me for ebay fees. The solicitors letter you recieved is from their own office. Its not a separate firm, they have their own inhouse legal office. They tend to send several of the letters from one firm and then use a different solicitors title if they fail to get the money back. It is highly unlikely that they would take you to court for such a small amount.
