Mortgages - where do I start?

Hi folks. I'm a bit confused with all this mortgage malarkey and wonder if anyone can put a few things straight in my mind.

I'm currently earning 16.5 k a year (hopefully nearer the 20k mark by the end of the year).

I have as much going out each month as I have coming in so have little in the way of savings...

Where do I start in the world of mortgages?!?

I'm thinking of moving back into shared accomodation later in the yar to save money (I currently rent a smal flat alone).

A friend's circumstances are different but he is similarly confused about the mortgage world...

Between him and his girlfriend, they have a joint income of the 30-35k mark and they're thinking about getting started to - given the two incomes they'll naturally be in a better spot but how do they go about getting started?

Also (and finally!) all this talk of house prices - are we really going to be SOOO much worse of if we wait until say 2009 to get started?

  • I am far from an expert, but others may ask what your occupation is, as there are certain "key worker" schemes available. Add that if you want to, in case you come into that category.
  • Best place to start is by instructing an experience mortgage broker - not only will they educate you about mortgages, they will tell you if its a good idea for you to buy at the moment after considering your circumstances, and if it ispossible to buy they will find the best possible mortgage provider to suit your needs.
