Your service for pension purposes starts at age 18 and you have a preserved pension which will be paid at age 60.

You should write, giving your service details to:

    Army Personnel
    Army Pensions
    Pay, Pension and Personnel Administration
    Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency
    Mail Point 480
    Kentigern House
    65 Brown Street
    Glasgow G2 8EX

They will give you full details.

    But this is the ARMY;)

As you say it is worth checking; there have of course been cases where the got it wrong in favour of the Serviceman.

For the OP the easy part will be working out his pensionable service which will be from age 18 to when he left. As he left at 26 it will be 8+ years, and he will 60 this year.

Finding the 1973 pension rates and the cumulative inflation increases applied to that preserved pension is not so easy.

My partner joined as a boy soldier in 1948 and left when he was 26. We reckon he has 8 years post 18, but he is now 74. Do you think it is worth persuing. Does anyone know if the Army had pensions back then?

The Army have always had pensions, but the qualifying conditions have changed greatly over the years.

There have been several versions of the Armed Forces Pension Scheme(AFPS) over the years; the later versions have complied with with UK legislation on Pensions. This introduced the 'Preserved Pensions' - inflation linked pensions to be paid at age 60.

However with some of the earlier versions a gratuity was paid in lieu of a pension.

The significant change came in the mid 1950s(I believe) when all soldier engagements were on pensionable terms of 22 years service(with an option to leave after 3, 6, or 9 years).

My guess is that your partner would not have been on pensionable terms in 1948 and would have been paid a gratuity.

However please don't take my word for it. A simple letter to the address above will set your mind at rest.

Hi, I was in the army at the same time. You will probally have done a couple of years in boys service, if 16 on entry. So you will only have 8 years of
man service.Unless you were made redundant when you left, I doubt very
much if you will get any pension.I hope I am wrong !

Thanks, Cardew, for the help and advice. I have written to them and asked about a pension for my partner. Can't do any harm, can it? I will let you know what happens.
