Easypeasy! Soup for lunch, and curry for dinner. Use plenty of ginger, garlic and spices to make your dishes taste interesting. I think the restriction on veggies is completely OTT considering it is pre-bariatric surgery, I would be using her stay as an excuse to go mad at the vegetable market.

Severe CD and a BMI worthy of bariatirc surgery don't add up btw, given that the predominantly debilitating symptom is diarrhoea. Most Crohn's patients can't retain their food, storing excess calories is never the issue.

Cripes! Maybe I should visit GP as I have diarrhoea after every meal!! Having said that, last time I asked GP about it, they just tested me for a bug.

  • Apparently the restricted diet is to shrink the liver for some reason *insert confused smiley here*

I had it slightly wrong; the restricted diet is only for two weeks before surgery.

Elsiebutt65, has anyone suggested the possibility of IBS to you? May be worth talking to your gp or doing some research to see if any other symptoms fit.

bluedog Thank you for taking the time to post and telling us your story. I am glad you are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I understand what you mean about the problems with eating out. I have a friend who is hyper sensitive to alcohol in any form and however small an amount. She will quiz which foods/sauces have alcohol in them and make choices accordingly. So many times she's queried the ingredients once she has been eating something and it turns out the sauce has something like white wine vinegar in and she freaks. The answer is always the smae "but the alcohol has all burned off". That's no consolation to her while she spends the next two days writhing in agony from the effects of the "burned off" alcohol.

Having said that, I think people nowadays are more enlightened when it comes to dietary restrctions. It was seen as slightly fashionable at one stage to have a sensitivity or allergy, but we have gone past that stage now and most people, thankfully, take the issue seriously and will try to accommodate if they can.

If not being invited out to eat at homes is an issue for you, perhaps you could suggest that you take your own meal with you, or arrive earlier and help with the preparations whilst cooking yourself something you can eat?

I've been happily surprised with the help I've received on this thread. I feared that after a couple of replies, the thread would just drop down the board. I've been chuffed to bits and very grateful that people have thought about the issue and taken the time to post their suggestions. Thank you to everyone.

  • They try to reduce the liver and fat around the organs, to enable the Bypass op to be easier. If the liver isn't reduced before the op, it makes it difficult for the surgeon to get at the stomach and bowel - if this is the case they can cancel the op. It is essential to reduce the size of the liver for this particular op. The pre op diet varies from area to area - some insist on an all milk only diet for a couple of weeks, others for healthy food etc, but it needs to be done. After the op the diet is liquids only for a few weeks, then on to pureed, soft food for a couple of weeks before testing "Normal" food. It is always in very small amounts - a tea plate full only, and less than 5gms of sugar per 100gms, and low fat etc. So the diet is restricted forever, whether it be food content and/or amount. Not an easy option.
  • How did your time with your exSIL go, CWTA?

And has she had her operation yet?
