Fresh Yeast?...

Hi there, This is my 1st post so please be gentle with me...

My better half has been taken by the baking bug and and after baking lots of lovely bread and rolls by hand using the sachet yeast, would like to have a go with 'live' or 'fresh' yeast. The only problen is, we don't know where to get hold of it.

We were advised by someone else to try asking at a local independant bakers but we've had no luck with this either.

So now i've decided to prevail upon the good will of the lovely people on this forum, in the hope that I can make her day and get myself some even more yummy baked goods!

Ask at the instore bakery counter in Sainsburys or Tesco. It's not advertised but they'll give you aprox 50 grams and it'll be about 20p. Tesco used to give it away but my local one charges now.

I've also seen it for sale in a Polish shop.

I got it from the bakery in Asda a while back, for free.

A very nice man in Tesco gave me 50g for free a few weeks ago, he also told me that Morrisons sell it fresh in larger packs. I have also seen it on Amazon, big pack that you can break down and freeze in portion sizes. £8 for 500g IIRC

Bread was much nicer, well worth the effort of tracking some down.

How exciting to find some Tescos and Asdas will. The only one local to us who will sell some of their fresh yeast is Sainsburies. The others both say its not allowed and its something to do with health and saftey.

I much prefer fresh yeast....I'd try phoning your local supermarkets with bakeries before going, in case the service is patchy around you too...one could rack up a lot of petrol usage round here asking for yeast!

It is also available in our local independent health food shop, worth an ask if you have somewhere like that.

Our local deli sells it.

DD was staying in a hostel in Prague for a couple of nights. She went to the supermarket to get stuff for sandwiches and was pleased to find what she thought was a small packet of butter. It was with the cheese etc and had a picture of bread on the front. It turned out to be fresh yeast!

I have the River Cottage Bread book and that uses dried yeast in all the recipes so don't worry if you can't find fresh.

Thanks for your replies everyone. We'll try the local supermarkets and see how lucky we can be. We'd never have thought of asking there to be honest! Will let you know how we get on...

I was told recently by a proffesional baker that it makes no difference whatsoever to use fresh or dried yeast, so i really wouldn't bother. I've used both to make bread and haven't been able to tell the difference.

I get mine from a local bakery, it's 79p for an 800g block or 99p for a 1kg block.
All the supermarkets with instore bakeries will have it but you may have to ask at the bakery counter as it won't necessarily be on display, some supermarkets charge others give you a couple of ounces free.
